Sasuke didn't really know how it happened. One minute he was sitting down with his mother at the kitchen table with steaming cups of tea and the next, he was on his feet preparing to cook dinner for her. Mikoto was out on the back porch getting some fresh air.
He didn't know what possessed him to offer to do such a thing. Him and Naruto had agreed they had to leave. Eating dinner here was not part of the plan. She hadn't even asked, he'd suggested it like he had nothing better to do. What was he thinking? Had he been thinking? Who was he kidding...He had to do something to assuage his festering guilt. He couldn't just leave this place with his mom sad. It wasn't right. What if this was his last chance to see her?
"Hey, Sasuke young you's almost-damn something smells good." Naruto sniffed at the air. He looked at Sasuke in surprise with blinking eyes. "You're cooking?"
"Uh, yeah." Sasuke confirmed some seasoning pinched between his fingers sprinkling down onto its intended target. "Change of plans. We're staying for dinner."
"Oh." Naruto slowly processed his husbands words. "Okay." He nodded slowly. "Are you sure that's a good idea? Thought you wanted to get out of here."
"I do." Sasuke confirmed. He paused shutting his eyes. "I do. But I don't want to leave on a bad note, Naruto. That day...it's really close. Bet Itachi's sharpening his damned katana up there as we speak. I-I know it's selfish of me. But I want my mom's last memory of me to be good, you know? Not me...trashing the kitchen and threatening my dad...Forget it. It's stupid." Sasuke moved to chop onions with lightning speed. He wiped away a tear from his eye. "If you want to take our younger selves to Ichiraku, get out of here before my father shows up, you can. By all means."
"What? And miss your cooking?" Naruto's arms circled around Sasuke's middle. "Not a chance." He nuzzled against Sasuke's neck. He pressed a light kiss to his old curse mark spot. Sasuke shivered at the touch. Even after all these years the spot was sensitive. His eyes slipped closed.
"Passing on Ichiraku?" Sasuke allowed himself a smile. "These are dark times indeed."
"Hm." Naruto ran his hands up and down Sasuke's front. "I can have Ichiraku any day of the week. Having anything you prepare is a special treat."
"Oh is it now?" Sasuke's head twisted leaning his cheek against Naruto's nudging him affectionately away from his neck. "Best stop distracting me then," He held the knife tip threateningly centimeters from Naruto's nose. His voice lowered to a throaty whisper. "Or you'll be the one stuck with the burnt bits."
"Hm." Naruto grinned, a chuckle reverberating from his chest. His hands slid up and down Sasuke's thighs. "Love it when you burn my bits."
"Such a Loser." Sasuke murmured affectionately, leaning to claim Naruto's lips with his own. Naruto greedily accepted Sasuke's advance his hands settling at the Uchiha's hips
"Sasuke, don't make out in the kitchen." Itachi had just wanted a water. He didn't want to see his adult brother making out with anybody even if he was married.
"For the love of..." Sasuke pulled back with a hiss of annoyance, a sharp glare thrown Itachi's way. "What are you gonna go? Come poke my forehead? I'm married. I love him. We kiss, get over it."
Itachi grabbed his water and left without another word to him.
"Geez, someone's a grouch." Naruto muttered to his husband. "What's his problem? We were just kissing. Not like we'd do it in front of the food. You're too much of a clean freak for that."
"Sorry I care about proper sanitation." Sasuke elbowed him. "Off-off, go watch ourselves since you can't keep your hands to yourself."
"But I'm bored." Naruto whined. "Messing with you is fun."
"Naruto." Sasuke looked him in the eye. "Find something else to paint or something. My hands are occupied."
"Whatever. Man." Naruto sighed. "You're brother zaps the fun right out of you."
"Itachi has that effect." Sasuke conceded. "Now go. Out. I'll call when dinners ready."
"Alright, alright, I'm going." Naruto sighed heading towards the door with a mutter under his breath. "Bastard."
"Naruto."
The blonde paused. He looked back at his husband. "What?"
"I love you."
Three words. So small. So powerful. So much meaning packed into each and every syllable. It warmed Naruto to his very core. It always hit different when Sasuke said it out of the blue.
"Love you too, Sas."
He really did.
