Arc 3 - Chapter 23

"Now, let's get started right away." (Midnight)

Midnight didn't waste a single moment and immediately began.

"This round is what you'd call qualifiers. Every year, many drink their tears here!" (Midnight)

The gigantic screen visible to everyone was choosing what the first years would play. "Now, here is the fateful first game!"

Everyone was anxious in anticipation of the first game. But at the same time, many students also had fiery eyes that seemed to have no fear.

A few seconds later, the screen showed "Obstacle Race". 

Midnight explained the rules. The course would be the outer circumference of the stadium, an approximately 4-kilometer-long path. "U.A.'s selling point is freedom––as long as you stay in the course, you can do anything you want!"

"Get to your positions!" (Midnight)

Just now, Rimuru had given all of us an unforgettable speech. Well, I wasn't surprised all that much since I've been friends with Rimuru for almost a year now.

But with that speech alone, those who didn't have any sort of competitive fight in them began to take things seriously. 

For example, there were general class students that were mumbling about how they didn't want to participate in this event. Soon after Rimuru's speech, I could hear them yell "I'm gonna win this!".

Really, I'm no match for Rimuru's charisma...

But before Deku knew it, he had also been affected by the desire to win. 

"If I want to achieve my goals—" (Deku)

"Start!" (Midnight)

Midnight had announced the start of the race. Dozens upon dozens of students immediately rushed towards the starting line. The first part was immediately an obstacle to overcome, as dozens of students were tightly cramped in the small entryway. 

But that wouldn't be a problem for Deku as he is now. "—I need to stand on the same stage as Rimuru!"

During his time training with Rimuru, he mastered the circulation of One For All in his whole body. Rimuru was severely strict, if Deku had lost concentration a single time he would not hear the end of it.

But that was merely a lenient outcome, sometimes Rimuru would ask Deku to spar in hand-to-hand combat which was a horror for Deku.

Thanks to that, Deku jumped over the long crowd of students with relative ease. Thanks to Rimuru's modifications, the stress from my quirk is relatively low. It felt like I was only using a portion of One For All.

Wait...

"That's it! I can just use a portion of my quirk!" (Deku)

Realizing something while you were planning on landing from a relatively high distance wasn't the best timing.

"Exactly." Before Deku could break his legs, Rimuru appeared where he was going to land. "Took you long enough, Deku. I was seriously trying to hint that at you, you know?"

After saying that, Rimuru immediately disappeared. Present Mic had something to say at that same moment, "What the f— I mean, holy hell, yo! Rimuru blitzed right past the students and is near halfway across the course, such an incredible speed! How fast is this student!?"

Deku smiled, "Impressive as always, Rimuru." After saying that, Deku started running once more. This time, he was using One For All throughout his whole body, but this time, he was trying to reduce the power.

This, however, caused some students to catch up to him. "Deku!!! Where the hell did that pervert go!" (Bakugo)

Bakugo was gaining distance against Deku, but he wasn't alone. Todoroki was also nearly catching up to Deku. The three were neck and neck but ultimately came to a stop when robots blocked their paths.

"And there ya go, folks! Our runner-up for first place may have gone right past this. But there are faux villains in this race! How will they handle this!?" (Present Mic)

All Might was watching from the teacher's stands and was extremely nervous. Young Midoriya, I know Rimuru has first place, but I believe in you to get second place!

Let me rephrase. All Might wasn't Anxious, but he was behaving like a worried father. He was excited to watch the students perform, but he was looking forward to Deku's performance a bit more.

"Detroit Smash!" (Deku)

"What?!" (Bakugo & Todoroki)

It was natural that they were surprised. Bakugo was bewildered about the sheer strength of Deku's punch, and Todorki had a similar reaction.

In an instant, the zero pointer robot that stood in front of Deku's way was no more. Deku held his arm a bit, seemingly in some sort of pain before running again. He did this over and over again until he had cleared a path straight towards the next part of the race.

"Unbelievable..." (Todorki)

"Tch...These robots aren't my match!" (Bakugo)

Bakugo didn't falter, he was powerful enough himself. He blasted the gigantic robot's heads to bits. "Deku, don't go thinking you're better than me!" 

Bakugo yelled, but Deku was already far from the range his voice could reach. This enraged Bakugo to a boiling point. "I'm not gonna lose to anyone, not even you Deku!"

In the next few moments, Bakugo's power reached a notch higher. His explosions became bigger, stronger, and faster. In no time at all, Bakugo was also past the zero-pointers and was now chasing down Deku.

There were students who tried to take advantage of the pathway the two had created. But the other zero-pointers wouldn't let that happen.

"Amazing! Izuku Midoriya and Katsuki Bakugo just cleared the path with incredible strength! What do you have to say for your students, Eraserhead!" (Present Mic)

Aizawa had a slight grin. "It goes to show how much they've been training. Nothing more, nothing less."

"Even with that display he still doesn't show bias! You're not helping me here, hahaha!" (Present Mic)

"I don't care. More importantly, a third--no fourth student is about to make it past the first obstacle." (Aizawa)

Todorki had frozen all the remaining zero-pointers before they knew it. "Holy smokes! As expected from someone who got in through recommendations! This is too easy for him!"

Thanks to Todorki, everyone else was now able to resume the race. 

"What do you think is gonna happen next! Eraserhead!?" (Present Mic) 

"A battle for second place." (Aizawa)

Aizawa's response caused a sarcastic response from Present Mic, "That's for sure, Rimuru's already near the end."
