It’s Kristine again. I’ve been feeling a lot better now. I have to.

I turned left and right, waiting for Cheska to come back in. She went outside to check on Leo and Richard. What’s happening out there?

I anxiously waited as I rubbed my arm.

Suddenly, Cheska came in.

“It’s okay.” She told me.

No, I have a feeling that it’s not. But my best friend won’t let me know why. She must be worried.

I just smiled back.

Something tells me that my condition made Cheska lie. I can see it in her eyes. She thinks I’m weak. She doesn’t think that I could handle anything for now.

I’m a bit worried for me too.

The truth is, nobody told me about anything about my illness.

I’m sure it’s not so bad. Maybe I just got overworked. Maybe it’s because of the rain. Yes, that’s it.

I’d just ask Cheska.

“Cheska…” I started saying. “What am I here for?” I continued.

I wish she’d say fever.

I looked in her eyes. It was teary and sad.

“It’s not fever, is it?” I told her.

“Nobody told you?” she asked.

I bowed down.

Nobody told me.

Then Cheska hugged me.

“I’m not the right person to tell you.” She whispered.

What does she mean? I feel nervous about this.

After that, my mom came in with a bowl of hot noodles.

“Lauren, here’s breakfast.” She said while placing the bowl on the bedside table.

“Don’t strain yourself, dear.” She added while cleaning up some of my things inside the room.

She went near me and scooped a spoonful of noodle soup. She started feeding me.

After five spoonfuls, I stopped her.

“Mom, what kind of sickness am I experiencing?” I asked.

“Oh don’t worry. You’ll get well in no time. Now finish this so you’d feel better.” She told me, somehow avoiding my question.

I stared at her with a mom-you’re-not-answering-me stare.

She was persistent on not telling me. She just stuffed me with noodles.

What choice do I have? I ate silently or more like forcefully.

When I finally finished everything, I asked her again.

“Mom, what is it? It’s not life threatening, right?” I said teasingly.

Mom hugged me and then cried.

“Lauren, be strong.” She told me as she held me in her arms.

Then she told me everything that the doctor said. Everything.
