XXXVII: Sweet Apologies

Third POV

Izuku's eyes were dull as he stared at Katsuki's motionless body.

No tears. No sniffles. Just a blank stare.

His entire sense of time and direction went within a blink of an eye as he held Keiko tightly.

Poor girl, having to see her father and idol in such a gut-wrenching state like this.

His gaze then settled on Katsuki's ring finger, knowing that it was only a long shot with what hr'd thought of.

He stared at the different tubes that connected to parts of the number one hero's body, knowing that if a single piece of medical wear came undone, it'd probably would end in catastrophe.

So during the two allotted minutes Izuku was given the night before, he slipped the ring on, hoping for a miracle.

Keiko shifted her head downward.

All she wanted to do was to run up, and hug her dad once he'd come back from the war, but here she was staring at his body that needed life support.

A double paneled glass that keep him in the intensive unit and her and Izuku on the outside.

Izuku gently rocked her, telling her 'it'll be okay, he'll be okay'.

He had to be strong, if not for his own sake, but for Keiko who was breaking down as well.

They'd probably stood in the same spot for over half an hour, not wanting to believe this reality.

Keiko had buried her face into Izuku's shoulder, feeling his shirt become moist from her smal tears.

"Hey..? Do you wanna get something sweet..?" Izuku whispered, "I'm sure I saw a cupcake with your name."

Keiko looked up at him, taking one last glance at her dad before looking back at the boy and nodded.

"Okay." She answered quietly, "Just as long as it's chocolate."

They walked down the hall, headed to the cafeteria, when Izuku spotted them.

Mina and Kaminari.

While not in critical condition, they didn't look so well themselves.

Kaminari had a broken left arm and a head injury and Mina had broken her leg,  "Oh Midoriya," Mina called out to him, "Bakugo's parents told us you should've been here."

Izuku slowly nodded, as he was now only a few inches away from the recovering pro heroes.

"How are you two holding up?" Kaminari asked, looking at Keiko who still rested her head on her teacher's shoulder, "I know you saw him by now..."

Izuku shrugged, tilted his head to look at the girl before returning back to Katsuki's friends, "Hanging in there I guess,"

"We we're heading to the cafeteria to get something to eat."

"Could we tag along? There's something we've been wanting to say for a while now anyways." Kaminari imposed, a hesitant look in his eyes as he awaited for the boy's answer.

"Sure I guess," Izuku shrugged, "It's not like I can stop you."

As he then lead all of them downstairs to go and eat.

Despite Izuku's consistent refusal, Kaminari paid for all of their light snacks at the cafe.

Keiko sat in Izuku's lap, quietly nibbling on the rich and fudgy cupcake in front of her, taking periodic sips of her water.

Kaminari got the same thing as her, while mina got a mixed fruit parfait.

Izuku wasn't really up to eat anything so he just got a water as well.

Brushing spiky blond hair away from his face, Izuku finally decided to ask them what was up.

"So, you wanted to talk?" Izuku asked, looking at both pros who seemed to be even more worried than before.

"In simpler terms for our words, we wanted to apologize to you." Kaminari started, looking over at Mina then back at Izuku.

"To be honest, we were out of line for the things we said not just to you, but in general," Mina added, "We should've thought more before we spoke and we'd understand if you don't want to forgive us."

"Just know that we really are sorry."

Honestly, some part of Izuku wanted to hold it against them but he just couldn't.

If he couldn't hold it against Katsuki and all the things he's said when they were still kids, managing to move so far with the man so now.

He ruffled his hair, looking down to Keiko who'd stop eating and squirmed in his lap trying to get comfortable.

It's appeared that after all those tears, she was just about ready to fall asleep on him.

"That's alright," Izuku hummed, holding Keiko just a bit closer as she rested peacefully on him, "Instead of grudges, we should focus on Katsuki's recovery."

Kaminari and Mina bowed their heads, like Izuku they awaited for Katsuki's recovery.

. . . Katsuki's Room . . .

Katsuki's body felt numb and heavy. All this machinery and knockout drug in his iv tube made him feel so fatigued.

His ventilator, his heart rate machine...

He could hear it all, he was just unlucky that he couldn't see it.

He knew Izuku had came to him when he was being hooked up to these things when he first arrived.

He never realized how feeling a warm hand on top of his felt so nice, especially after only feeling the cold rubbery texture of nitrile hospital gloves.

He could hear Izuku's voice.

Oh how the boy sounded like he was breaking down with each syllable that left his pretty lips.

He relished in the lingering feeling of a metal band slipped inconspicuously on his marital finger, only confirming his suspicions when Izuku had left with a final statement,

"You made a promise to us, And I know you'd never break it so hurry up and get better..."

'Get better so we can finally get married.'

Katsuki probably repeated that line in his head over at least a hundred times over.

He would forcibly make himself to get better so they could be together again.

A happy family.

The more he thought about it, the more his heart began to race.

Just like when Izuku was placed in the ICU.

He just needed to hold on, just until his body could get it together.

He could do that.

He was the number one hero, so there wasn't anything he couldn't do.
