With the new year, new schedules kept us apart. Chris was gearing up to go back to Atlanta for the next Avengers movie and the museum was busy as ever, mostly with school trips, but they kept us busy every day.
I had called Jon on New Year's Day and it was almost like he already knew what I was going to say.
*Flashback*
"He finally admitted it to you, didn't he?" Jon asks.
"Yeah. But how did you know?"
"Only a blind man could've missed the way he was looking at you. I'm sure that's what set Tara off. She knew she'd already been... I don't want to say replaced. But someone else had become the center of his universe."
I sigh. "I never wanted to hurt you. That's not why I accepted your invitation."
"Don't worry about it. I would've loved to get to know you. But I would be lying if I told you that I wasn't also doing it to push Chris in the right direction."
I chuckle slightly. "Well, thank you. For being so understanding. Chris is really lucky to have you as a friend."
"Eh, most days." He says and we both laugh.
"Bye Jon."
"Bye Lexi." And then we hang up.
*Present Day*
We're in the last hour before the museum closes and finally all the groups have gone through and I'm taking this down time to clean and get everything ready for tomorrow. Unfortunately, Lizzie sees this as the perfect opportunity to bombard me. "So how was your Christmas?"
"Pretty good." I say, trying to keep everything under wraps and my facial expressions neutral. Chris and I hadn't had a chance to go on an actual date yet so not even his family knew about us. It'd been nice, just something for the two of us.
"So you didn't see a certain Boston native that you're bound and determined to keep from us?" She asks and I see the other docents waiting in the wings, hoping to catch part of the conversation.
I let out a deep sigh. "Y'all are worst than the pack of nosy grandmothers at a church potluck." They take this as the chance to just throw decorum to the wind and crowd me.
"So what's he like?" One of them asks.
"He's really nice. What you see is what you get." I answer, trying to give them as vague an answer as I can.
"Is he seeing anyone?" Lizzie asks this and it takes everything in me to not make a face when I answer.
"I'm not sure. We don't really talk about that stuff, you know." I say, trying to remain aloof about it.
"I don't know how you've managed to be this close to him and not jump his bones."
"Because not everyone always sex on the brain like you do." I joke as we head to the lockers to grab our things.
We all grab our things, clock out and head out to the parking lot. I smile when I see Chris is there waiting for me. I run over to him. "Hey you. I wasn't expecting you to pick me up."
"Well, with me leaving in a couple of weeks, I figured it's time to finally take you on that date we keep putting off." He says quietly, seeing we have an audience.
"I'm not really dressed for a date." I say, gesturing down to my work clothes.
"That's ok. We can swing by your house and you can get ready." He says before opening my door. Before I can get in, he kisses me and I'm only vaguely aware of the others squealing with excitement as I quickly become lost in his kiss.
