MELINA WOKE UP TO A SERIES OF MUFFLED VOICES IN RUSSIAN BEHIND A THICK PANE OF BULLETPROOF GLASS. She groaned against the light intruding her senses, feeling her bodily sensations coming back to her with each passing second. The woman twisted her hands and felt them ride up against cold metal restraints which were pinning her prostrate against an examination table.
That's when the woman's eyes flew open. As she became accustomed to the soreness of her limbs, she found herself writhing against the manacles encapsulating her. No, this wasn't how their plan was supposed to go? How on earth did Dreykov know so quickly? The Iron Maiden knew for a fact that Natasha wouldn't pass off that information willingly.
"Stop resisting, Romanova." One of the male doctors spoke over the sound system. Petrified, Melina looked up where the noise was coming from to see an observation window overtaking one wall of the exam room. A large number of doctors were staring at her with satisfaction and wonder written on their faces.
Obviously the believed they were in for seeing a wonderful feat of science and nature coming to life. They would be sorely disappointed.
The man who spoke was smirking at her with a level of malcontent and unsurmountable joy. This look alone only served to cause Melina shiver. Whatever these people had planned for Natasha and her baby, she could only pray to remain ignorant. However, another part of her yearned to know only for the sake of protecting both of them.
A credible source led Melina to think that she would become privy to that knowledge in just a few minutes. She could hear the sound of a machine being rolled near her room. Context leading the woman to believe that they must be searching for proof of pregnancy via sonogram.
Melina smiled at that thought because if they completed the exam on her, it would lead Dreykov to believe that Natasha wasn't pregnant after all. Then, likely he would attempt to pursue her further, allowing her family to live in peace.
The comforting thought was only shot down moments later as another fact dawned on her. Melina had an ovariohysterectomy done on her when she was still quite young. A red room pupil in her tweens who barely managed to get her first cycle before they stripped her clean.
Suddenly, a deep ringing brewed through the woman's head as she felt her stomach contort in on itself. She choked down bile and heaved a series of breaths to counteract the traces of panic developing in her body.
They would know she wasn't Natasha the second they place the transducer on her abdomen. Regardless if she was with child or not, one must have a uterus to be pregnant.
