The movie tickets expired 20 minutes before we got there, so Hazel and I both agreed to have ice cream at Dunkin'.

"Do you think I was too mean to dad," Hazel asks looking down and poking at her ice cream.

I love Dean with everything in me but he's been doing everything but taking care of his family- emotionally.

He gives Hazel a couple of hundred dollars and thinks that's going to solve her problems.

He buys Daniella toys, but she is the person he's always with when he's home.

When the girls are gone and he's home we have sex and argue right afterward over the smallest things.

"Um... I think we all need to sit down and talk when we go home. I shouldn't have let you go in that room and yell at your dad because.. well... he's your dad," she lifts her head and looks at me with pressed eyebrows.

I was technically an only child because my sister and I were separated from between parents. It's hard, but I know we can get through it.

Hopefully, we'll still be a family in the end.

"Can I say something that might hurt your feelings," she asks before leaning back in her seat.

Oh god.

"Sure," I shrug my shoulders and take in a deep breath.

"I wish you never had Daniella, she ruined our family," her voice is rough and full of hate and it honestly makes my heart drop.

I don't know what to say or how to approach that.

Daniella is my baby, it's my job to protect her when I don't feel she's safe. Same for Hazel, but I don't think Daniella is safe around her.. now.

Hazel knows what her dad and I do, she found out last year while going through her dad's things. I think that's when Dean started distancing himself from us.

Hazel will be capable of a lot in the next years when Dean and I sign over half of everything, and I'm paranoid because she might do something that will make me leave Dean and her.

There's silence.

I finally get enough courage to say something, "you shouldn't say something like that. Keep that anger towards your dad because your little sister didn't do anything to you," my tone is stern, "and at the end of the day this is between you, your dad, and me."

I try not to seem so upset because maybe she's just saying it out of anger.

"Yeah because you and dad made her so you and him love her more. Dad doesn't like me because of who I came from but Daniella is his sweet little princess because he loves you," her nostrils flare and her face becomes red.

That's not the truth. If I didn't love her I wouldn't have adopted her and treat her like she was my own.

"We're leaving," I stand up and I wait for her to do the same.

All she does is look up at me with her arms crossed, "let's go," I nearly holler.

She stands up and loudly stomps out of the building. I follow behind her pressing the keypad to unlock the car.
