Kaylee:
I woke up the next morning with the promise of guards coming to my house to come and take me to the palace to go and work. I wonder what it is? I thought. At least it will keep me busy, and so hopefully I won't end up thinking about my parents deaths that much. I sat up and pulled my sheets off of me and got out of bed. It was time to start the new day. I got dressed and left my room. I walked towards the kitchen to get something to eat since it was morning and I needed to have some breakfast. I found some bread, strawberry jam and peanut butter in one of the cabinets and went to set them on the tiny round table and then went to get a plate and knife so that I could start making my sandwich.
Just as I was finishing making my sandwich there was a knock on the door. I went over to the door, thinking that I knew who it was. I stretched my hand out and answered the door. There, on the other side of the door stood several of the guards. I counted a total of six. Wow. I thought. This sure is a lot of guards for just little old me, but I guess that I shouldn't have expected anything less from these people.
One of the guards-which I was suspecting was their leader-came forward and said to me, "It's time to get going miss." And held a hand out to me.
I put up my pointer finger in the gesture of "one minute" and turned and left to go and fetch my sandwich. I picked it up and put it in my mouth holding it in my right hand, turned back around and left through the door with the six guards.
Devon:
It was morning now, and so I got up. I had to start the day. My days were always very busy. Since I was a prince, I had a whole lot of responsibilities. Too many for me to be happy about. I felt like I hardly had any free time to myself. The only time I felt like I had time to myself was when I ended up doing my weekly hunt. Now I couldn't even do that much! I wish that I could. I had to get dressed, and so I did. I changed out of my silk night shirt and pants, into my royal uniform. Today is going to be a long day, I thought, exasperated, with a sigh. I wish that I didn't have to do this. But I did it anyway.
Once I finished getting dressed, and fixing my collar, I left my room and started walking down the hall. When I reached the middle of one of the hallways, I ran into my royal attendant, Darren.
"Excuse me, Your Majesty, but you are supposed to have a meeting with your father first thing today instead of the usual lessons. I was told that the king would like to speak with you. Perhaps for some advice, or suggestions from you?" I had figured as much.
I just nodded and said, "Thank you very much Darren. You've been a big help. If it weren't for you, I would have gone to the wrong place this morning." I gave a hard pat on his back and he gave an "uh" sound and almost fell forward on the ground before catching and steadying himself again. "And how many times do I have to tell you to stop calling me 'Your Majesty' before you stop?" I asked him exasperated along with their motions. Then I took the next turn to the right to head towards where I thought that my father was. I went to the end of the hall and opened the large, golden doors and entered without knocking.
Apparently, I had startled my father with my entering without knocking, because he jumped back slightly from where he was standing over a board full of pieces looking intensely focused. It looked like he was planning for war, which I guessed that he probably was. After all, we did have a killer dragon on the loose. I desperately hoped that it was a secret knowledge with only the people who lived and visited the castle right now. I did not want the people to be in a total panic at the moment, until we knew what we were going to do about this problem of ours. After all, we were the royals, and we needed to take care of our people first and foremost. I walked up to my father in a confident stride. He turned his head in my direction while I walked up the marble stairs, putting one foot in front of the other.
Once I was up the stairs and face to face with my father, we stared at each other for a few seconds.
"Welcome, son," my father said to me in a surprisingly calm voice considering everything that is presently going on. "I'm glad you could make it. This is very important work that I am trying to do right now, and I would like to ask for some of your advice, my son."
I respectfully bowed to my father, tilted my head up so that I could look at him and answered in an equally calm voice, "I wouldn't miss it for the world, father. I figured that it would be very important if you summoned me to meet you and miss my morning lessons." I straightened back up and smiled, then my face turned serious again once looking at the table once more.
My father turned his head in the direction that I was looking at and realization dawned on his face when he realized what I have seen.
He lowered his head and eyes and shifted his weight from foot to foot and said in a really sad voice, "Yes. It seems like I have very little choice other than to go and see if it is possible to go and attack this so-called beast. Hopefully, we can kill it." He was twiddling his fingers together in a nervous gesture. "The problem is, we don't know how to defeat a dragon. The only recorded cases of when somebody was able to defeat a dragon was when people used dragon tamers. You know how rare those are to find."
That's true, I thought. "I know. It is extremely rare to find dragon tamers anywhere anymore." I put my hands on the table with a clunk! The pieces shook for a second. "Well, then. If we can't use a dragon tamer, then we might as well try and think of another way to defeat the dragon. Let's begin."
