It was a dream. It was a dream. It was a dream. It was a dream. It was a dream. It was a dream. It was a dream. It was a dream. It wasn’t.
It was his bed where I woke up. The first thing that I noticed was that Silver was right next to me, looking at my face like he wanted to scratch it. And then I saw him. Sitting at the end of the bed, looking down at his phone. His hair was a lot shorter than I remembered. It didn’t shadow his eyes anymore. There were several tattoos on him, peeking out from his neckline, and his sleeves. But the thing that made him look the most distinguished was his body. He was a lanky boy in my memories. And now, he looked like he could throw me around with his thumb only. It was a trance, staring at him felt like such a blessing. He looked up from the phone and caught me staring.
“Hello.” He spoke.
“Hi.” I cleared my throat and got up.
“You scared me.”
“Sorry.”
“No need to be sorry.” He put his phone on the bed. I was staring at him. And he knew. He was staring at me too. Was he looking for the traces of the old Darla too? Because all I could see was a stranger.
“I don’t know what to say.” He chuckled. “It has been so long.”
“Indeed.” I kept my sentences very short. Because there was pressure on my throat and I knew I would barf. I took three pills today. Did I take more than three? Was it an overdose? No.
“Did Mr. Bellowen tell you about my arrival? He was here some time ago, making sure the house was clean.”
Ah! That was why there were three men coming out of this house.
“When did you arrive?” I asked.
“Thirty minutes ago or something.”
“How have you been?” He gave me a small smile. I didn’t know how to give him any answer. He wasn’t the Ronan from my diary. He was changed. He was real. I wasn't reading about our old memories, I was making new ones. I couldn’t handle it. While I was stuck in my own time and memories, he moved on. His face told me as he stared at me. His eyes didn’t hold me to blame anymore.
“Been better.”
“I thought you weren’t going to come back here.”
“I wasn’t.”
“What?” His brows furrowed. I found Milo standing behind him. She shook her head.
“Don’t do this to yourself, Darla. Be kinder to him and you.” She was enough to snap me out of his haze.
“I must go.”
“Why?” He stood up as did I. My feet swayed from under me. My medicines. I needed my medicines or else I'd barf.
“Steady. Hey, stay still for a moment.” His voice was like a hammer against my skull. I clamped my eyes shut as his hands grabbed my shoulders. I looked up at him. I took two steps back and his brows creased.
“Sorry about coming in here,” I murmured.
“No need for that. You know you can come here anytime you want.” He came after me. I didn’t wait for him to say anything else and walked out of his room. My eyes were starting to get hot and water.
“Darla…” He spoke from behind me.
“Don’t look back, Darla. Just keep on moving.” Milo's voice came from the left side. I craned my neck but I couldn’t see her. I walked towards the main door but grabbed it. He was between the door and me.
“Can I convince you to stay?” His voice hit me in the gut. It was the feeling when you had spent so much time imagining something and now that it had happened, you didn’t know what to do.
“No.”
“Please, I just want to talk to you. I have to say so much, set so many things straight—”
“I really don’t care about any of that anymore. I have somewhere to be.” I spoke, remembering Tory had invited me to that birthday party. His face slackened.
“You don’t care?”
“No, I don’t care—”
“You honestly can’t ask me to believe that. If you didn’t, what were you doing here in my room? What are you doing here in this town?” I had the answers to his questions. I did. But he wouldn’t understand even if I told him. When I didn’t reply he took a step forward.
“Let me amend my mistake, princ—”
“Ronan. Stop it.” I snapped. “You and I both know this won’t ever work. We have tried this before and now we shouldn’t. Our paths have been separate since the start and what happened in the middle proved it to be right. So, don’t play the part of pretending. I don’t have the power to handle it.” I pushed his hand away from the knob
“Let's be kind to ourselves. Let’s not do this. At all.” I pushed past him and ran. I was being a coward. It was all I could do. If we walked on this path again, it would only hurt us again. I would only hurt him again. He would only hurt me again. What would he do when he finds out about my ghosts? What would he do when he knows how crazy I am? I couldn’t bear the thought of ever doing this to him again. Never again.
