My head was on his leg as I laid down on my bed. My tears had dried down and my headache was a little duller now. He was massaging my head. He still didn’t know the reason for the headache. Well, how was I supposed to tell him that I was an addict now? And these were just some withdrawal symptoms, and day by day they would get a little duller. His warm fingers worked lightly across my head and I had slipped into a trance-like state where I knew I wasn’t sleeping but I wasn’t awake either. His fingers didn’t stop. I jerked awake after some time.
“Good morning.” He smiled. I looked at the clock on my table and only twenty minutes had passed and my headache was a lot better now.
“Thank you,” I mumbled.
“No need.” He leaned back against my headboard and neither of us made any move to change our positions. He looked at me, without hiding it. He looked like he wanted to say something. He opened his mouth and I was prepared for it.
“When was the last time you ate?” His question was a surprise. I didn’t know how to answer that. I gulped and looked away.
“Uh…the lunch I had with ya'll.”
“That half burger?” His eyes widened. “That was yesterday! You haven’t eaten anything for 36 hours?” His facial expressions were kind of funny yet warm to me. Despite having many tattoos, building a body, and cutting his hair short— he was still the softie.
“I was busy.”
“How busy were you that you forgot you had to eat?” He was scolding me. And I was biting the inside of my cheek to stop myself from smiling. I rolled over as he moved to get up from the bed.
“I’ll make you something.” He walked out of my room and I stayed behind for a moment. I was thinking. Should I let this go on? Or should I send him back home? I should probably send him back home. My body and heart groaned as I went downstairs to see him roaming in my kitchen.
“You have nothing except an empty container of berries. What have you been eating?” He asked and when I didn't reply he turned to me with disbelief.
“Have you been eating at all?”
“I ordered. Sometimes.” He walked passed me and towards the door.
“Ronan.” I fisted my hands and he looked back. “You should go.”
“What?”
“I don’t want you here,” I said it. And I regretted it the moment I did. Because he walked out of the house, leaving me in the middle of the hallway with nothing but regret. But I had to do it. I stood there for a moment until my legs started shaking uncontrollably. I grabbed a blanket from the couch and wrapped it around myself. I walked to the kitchen and poured myself another glass of water. It took me a long moment to drink it. My mouth tasted all bitter due to vomiting. And I just wanted to sleep. I turned around on the bar stool when the front door opened. Ronan walked inside nonchalantly with a bag of groceries.
“What are you doing?” I asked as he opened the fridge and started putting bread, milk, and other things in.
“I brought these from my place. The grocery store is pretty far away from here.” He put in some vegetables and some cheese. My brows furrowed.
“But I told you to—”
“Go? Yes, I heard that. But guess what?” He turned to me and smiled. “I don’t care. I am not leaving until you have a full meal.”
“Ronan.”
“Darla.” He matched me. “Don’t worry. I won’t stay here longer than necessary. I just need to see you eat or I won’t be able to sleep. It’s because of my selfish reasons. I am doing this for myself not you.”
