“How could you forget his gift at home, Darla?” Dad mumbled through the speaker. I was already having a bad start to the day or more like night and now at the near end of it all, I forgot his gift. I was a moron.

“I was in a hurry!” I whined. I heard shuffling through the phone. He must've gotten up.

“There are so many paintings here.” He spoke.

“It would be the biggest one and it is covered with a white sheet. There is a wish written on the corner.”

“Found it.”

“Thank God. Now please deliver it to me within fifteen minutes. I need to be ready before he comes. The cake is here and I have already decorated the place.” I looked around at the decorated place.

It was a park I had found while searching for a place. There was this big tree and I had decorated the place beneath it. I knew Ronan. He already hated having attention to himself. He also didn’t like celebrating his birthday. So I put a blanket on the ground and a small table with snacks. There was a strawberry cake in the middle. I had put on fairy lights, all with the help of my father because my height wasn’t exactly enough for it. I had called Ronan to be here at exactly 11:50 pm. He acted all shy at the idea but I begged him to come. He kept saying he didn’t want birthdays but he was curious as to what my gift was.

I painted him. Of course. I figured a personalized gift would be better. Since I was also going to confess today and ask for his number to make it official. I bit the inside of my cheek at the idea.

“You know, when you come back from this one-day trip, I want to know exactly what is going on between the two of you.” Dad said. He must've caught on by now.

“If all goes to plan, your daughter will have a boyfriend tomorrow.”

“What?” He exclaimed. I laughed out loud. “I am debating whether I should deliver the gift or not.”

“Dad! Hurry up.”

“Alright. I am waiting for a taxi right now but there is no taxi around here right now. This is a private residence. Why would a taxi be here?” I looked down at my watch and it was 11:35. I gasped.

“Dad, hurry up. Come in your car.”

“Darling, I had a little to drink. I can’t come.” I didn’t pay heed to the way he was slurring a little. I didn’t pay attention to anything except Ronan.

“Ronan will be with his family for dinner. He would be coming from the opposite side and if he arrives earlier than the painting, dad I will kill myself in this park.”

“Is it that urgent?”

“Dad, please. I spent three days on that painting.”

“But I’ll drive like a snail.”

“Just get here before midnight.”

“Your mom will kill me if she knows about it.” He hung up after that. I walked and sat under the tree and waited.

Ronan arrived before my dad did. I looked at my watch and he had arrived at the perfect time. He was with David. I hurriedly called dad's number as David's car left after he waved me goodbye.

“Dad, where are you?” I grumbled as it went to voicemail.  I put the phone back in my pocket as I watched Ronan walk over to me. His eyes sparkled as he stared at the decorations.

“I told you to not overdo it.” Ronan smiled and I rolled my eyes.

“But you like it.”

“Unfortunately.” He grinned as I went in for the kiss. As always, he bent down to meet me.
