I choked on air as she walked inside the burger house. It was the first time I was seeing her after… well I saw her just last night. But there was a significant difference between the Darla I saw last night and the Darla that entered the burger place. Her eyes shined as she laughed loudly at something the boy behind him said. I knew Dylan was asking me something but I was deaf. I was deaf, and blind and mute for everyone except her right now. She turned around and saw me and my heart broke as her eyes guarded themselves. She looked around the room for space of course but there was none. We had to wait fifteen minutes for this table as well.
“There are no tables for them,” Ezra spoke. I nodded.
“We can just call them here and they can sit with us.” Dylan proposed but Kristen immediately shook her head.
“We don’t want to ruin her date.”
“Date?” I turned to Kristen.
“Duh.” She bit into her burger. I took a sip of my drink and turned to look at Darla and the boy, approaching our table.
“Hello.” She smiled at my friends. Not at me. They all greeted her back, warmly. Darla wrung her hands while the boy next to her nudged her. She glared at him and turned to us.
“Uh…you wouldn’t mind if we sat here would you?” Her innocent question got us all up on our feet in a second. Kristen and I grabbed two chairs and put them around the table. Darla sat next to me, and then next to her sat her friend, and then next to him was Ezra.
“Sorry if it is awkward or something. I was forced to do it.” Darla glared at her friend or fucking date.
“Hell, no. It’s not awkward at all. We just didn’t call you because we didn’t wanna ruin your date. But if you are okay with it, I am fine with third-wheeling.” Dylan leaned forward with a smile. Darla's brows scrunched with confusion.
“Date?” She repeated. Then she pointed to Tory. “Me and him. Oh no. We are just friends.” She looked at me. And I didn’t know why but I felt like I had to reply.
“Just friends?” I asked. She nodded.
“Platonic with a capital P.” Her friend intervened.
“Oh, that makes it less awkward then.” Dylan sipped his coke.
“But you just said it wasn’t awkward.” Darla raised a brow.
“Well, we had to say that. Can’t just tell you to not sit down?”
“You can if that makes it awkward.”
“But you asked ever so nicely.” Dylan pouted. Darla shook her head and smiled. My heart felt at ease then. I didn’t care if she wasn’t smiling due to me. I only cared that she was smiling.
“You are such a dumbass.”
“Aww, you insult cutely too.” Dylan cooed. I nudged him automatically. Without even realizing it was second nature. He didn’t even pay me any mind. He just smiled more sweetly at her.
“It wasn’t an insult. It was your description.” She matched his smile. Dylan laughed loudly at that and all of us smiled too. If I knew Darla at all, she was the type of person who could insult you in such a way that you would go home and cry under the duvet for days. She could be mean when she wanted to. But she was holding back.
“Who is your friend?” Ezra asked.
“Oh, yes. This is Tory.” Darla introduced him to the others. Tory smiled and nodded.
“Heard a lot about you.” He spoke.
“No, he didn’t.” Darla quickly replied and gave him another glare. He shrugged.
