Chapter 18: My Wolves (Picture of Soren's home above)

I stare in shock as the beautiful creatures tail begins to sway lazily behind him. He stares, almost in sorrow, as he takes small steps closer, sniffing the air every once in a while.

I stand and slowly make my way towards him, praying that I'm not seeing things again. He whimpers, making my heart ache, and stops in his place.

He's huge. His head comes up a few inches past my own when he's sitting down. His silver tipped ears glisten in the morning sun, not a speck of dirt on his white fur.

I close the distance between us and reach my hand out hesitantly. I let him sniff my hand and he begins to lick me. I smile and reach up to scratch behind his ear. He leans into my hand and whimpers some more.

"What's wrong, buddy?" I ask. He whines and licks my face, causing me to laugh.

His tail wags happily and I look behind him when I see movement. A chocolate brown wolf with matching brown eyes steps out. He trots up to me and sits beside my wolf.

I sit down, petting them both, and they lay beside me happily.

"I'll be back." I tell them, and quickly run upstairs, grabbing my journal along with the colored art pencils. On my way back I check Seran's room. Sure enough, he's still asleep.

When I step out the door I see them eagerly waiting on me. I sit comfortably in between the two and open my journal. My wolf sits up beside me, laying his head over my shoulder to look in my journal. I take the opportunity and lean back up against him.

I open it and I feel him shift behind me. When I get to the family portrait page he whimpers.

"I don't remember drawing any of these." I speak to him, knowing he can't talk back.

I come to the one where it shows the snake separating two wolves and he whimpers again, nuzzling my back. He then puts his paw on the side where he is.

"I guess I've seen you before." I smile at him.

I then turn the page that shows just the two of us. He then sits beside me and leans his head on my shoulder.

I turn to a blank page and begin to sketch the two wolves surrounding me, sitting beside each other.

By the time I'm finished, their both watching over my shoulder. My wolf lays down and sighs, almost defeated.

"I wish you could tell me what's wrong." I tell him, rubbing his ears.

I hesitate, but then let it out. I tell him everything that has happened to me from as far back as I can remember. I include everything but Seran. He watches me in curiosity, in fascination of everything I have to say, but then he looks hurt at the end.

"You're a good listener." I end my short story. I look up at the sky and predict that it's about three in the afternoon. I've spent my whole time talking to my wolves.

I suddenly panic when I hear Soren driving up.

"Run, wolf. I hope to see you later." I smile, jumping up to run back to the house but I stop in my tracks. I turn back around and rip my drawing from my journal, the one I did of my wolves.

I lay it in front of him and tell him, "I know this sounds stupid, but keep it, yeah?"

I kiss both of their heads and run back in the house, shutting and locking the sliding glass door behind me. I run to the couch and begin sketching random lines on a page in my journal, pretending that I've been here the whole time.
