It had been 3 weeks, since Nick had gotten the job at the clothing store with Shay and Mak. He never expected to like going to work, especially considering he worked with 21 year olds. But Shay and Mak were different from other people their age. They didn't seem to be partiers or drinkers, but they enjoyed talking and having a good time. They've even bought Nick dinner several nights that they've worked together. The three of them have gotten rather close, which leads Nick to wonder if he should come out to his coworkers. He never expected to feel so comfortable with them.
"Nick?" Mak waved her hand in front of his face to bring him out of the daze that he was in.
"Huh?" He replied as he looked over at the dark-haired female that laughed at his confusion.
"Are you ok? You seem to be thinking really hard about something. Do you want to talk about it?" Nick bit his lip nervously. He hated that he was so easily read.
"How do you feel about gay people?" He asked as he played with his hands.
"I have nothing against gay people."
"What about Shay?"
"Neither does Shay. Where is this coming from?" She asked in confusion as he bit the skin off his lip.
"Mak, I'm gay." He expected her to be disgusted with him, but instead she gave him an encouraging smile.
"Nick, I'm Bi and Shay's pansexual. No one here's going to judge you for being yourself." Nick's eyes widened in shock.
"But you guys don't seem-"
"We don't seem Bi or Pan?" Nick nodded, still in shock which made Mak snicker. "Shay and I are just reserved people. But trust me when I say that Shay is about as straight as a circle. If she was straight, then it just wouldn't be Shay." Nick and Mak giggled as Shay emerged from the back.
"What are you two laughing about?" She asked without taking her eyes off of the clipboard.
"Nick thought we were straight and was worried that we were homophobes." Shay's eyes widened in shock.
"Me? Straight? Homophobic? What on earth gave you that impression? Do I need to act gay? I can do that, but do not insult me by calling me a straight." Shay replied dramatically, which led Nick and Mak to laugh so hard that their eyes were watering. "But in all seriousness, don't be afraid to be yourself here Nick. Plus, if you ever want a boyfriend have Mak set you up. She loves to play match maker." Mak then nodded eagerly, which led Shay to smile and shake her head.
"How did you know that you weren't straight? It took me years to accept myself, but you seem so comfortable with yourself." Nick asked out of curiosity.
"I've always known. Plus, it helped to have a mother who told me she would love me regardless of my sexuality." Shay replied with a smile.
"Where is your mother now?" Shay's smile then slowly disappeared, which broke Nick's heart to see.
"She died when I was 15." Nick's eyes widened in shock.
"I'm so sorry."
"Don't be. You didn't know. Besides, I think she would have liked you." Nick gave her a sad smile.
"Thank you." Shay then gave the younger a confused look.
"For what?"
"For being comfortable enough to tell me. I'm glad I have you and Mak as friends." Shay and Mak smiled at Nick's words.
"I'm glad we became friends too, Nick."
"Me too!" Mak said with a smile.
"Do you guys want to hang out at my house tomorrow? I talk about you guys to my mom a lot, and she really wants to meet you both." Shay looked at Mak nervously.
"I'll go." Mak said with a smile.
"I'll take a rain check. I have something that I need to take care of tomorrow." Mak then glance at over at the female with a concerned look.
"I wish you could come." Nick replied with a sigh.
"How about Friday? Does that sound good?" Shay offered, which made the younger smile.
"Sounds good. But you can't back out after you agree to Friday." Shay snickered at Nick's words.
"I wouldn't miss it for the world."
"Promise?" He asked as he held out his pinky finger. Shay smiled before hooking their pinkies together.
"I promise."
