Chapter six

I'm getting real sick of this sh-

Kiora no!

Isha's bright eyes caught me as we walked out of the woods.

"Kiora!" she bound over to me sniffing and circling me many times. It took forever to reassure her that I was okay. I explained everything to her.

We sat around the fire. Will found pants in his bag. He tried to give them to me but after a good few minutes of telling him no he finally gave in. I turned around so he could change. I changed to the sweatshirt I found. Will found some blankets in his bag. He gave me one. I wrapped it around my legs like a skirt. We hung our clothes to dry. Will made a little pillow out of his blanket and lay next to the fire. The fire reflected off his tanned skin with tiny freckles dotting his shoulders and down his arms like constellations spread far apart. He had so many bruises forming and some faintly healed ones, there was a small cut on his chest that when he breathed it threatened to open again. He was a lot more muscular than I thought he would be, everyone was in the dragon races it wasn't anything strange it was just strange seeing it on him. The way he acted and talked to me compared to how he looked didn't really match. When he first came here with his sun-kissed skin and blonde hair I thought he was just another forine guy, another privileged jerk; I guess you can say I was wrong. The dragons ran off to play in the near distance.

"Where do you think we are?" I asked, breaking the long silence between us.

Will didn't move his gaze from across the fire staring intently into the roaring embers.

He took a deep breath, "I think we're somewhere way past the island. Like deep in the mainland."

"Oh," I said, pulling my knees to my chest. It was my fault we got here, my fault that now we were lost.

"I've never been off the island," I said without thinking.

"Seriously?" Will sat up and tilted his head. He had such similar expressions to Diago, but their features couldn't be more different.

I could feel my face heating up again. I dug up the dry dirt with my toes.

"Yeah," I grumbled. I could feel him staring at me. I looked up at him, and he was smiling brightly.

"What?" I demanded.

He laughed, and my anger grew "nothing, it's just" more laughing "I wouldn't ever think of that from you."

I balled my fists "I'm starting to remember why I didn't like you." I started to stand.

"Kiroa, wait!" Will stood abruptly, making quick strides toward me. "I didn't mean to offend you. It's just that I mean-"

"What?" I snapped, cutting him off "what you think I live like a billionaire being able to go anywhere because I win races. Well, news flash, I'm not, and everything I earn I use to support Isha and my family." I couldn't stop myself, it just blurted out.

Will reached out for my arm, but I pulled away. He looked sad and pained for a moment.

"See this?" he pointed to a large scar at the side of his abdomen. Away from the fire, his skin almost glowed in the moonlight. Like a fallen star.

He was staring down at the scar. His eyes drowning in sadness.

"People attacked me," he said, "when I was walking home before I had Diago '' he closed his eyes tight, "they jumped me, kiroa. They took everything I had expected to get rich off of it, expecting I had some nice things they could sell. When they saw I didn't, they got angry. I tried to fight back, but there were too many, and they were too fast. I was half-conscious; I could barely move. They hurt me so badly. That's when one of them stabbed me. I still don't know what it was but it left this. I thought I was going to die in some ditch in an alleyway. The only reason I'm here was that somehow. For some reason, Diago knew something was wrong. He was wild living on the streets, but he decided to help me. He rescued me, he saved my life. I was just out getting food. In the first few months, I moved here, and that's how diago found me. How we found each other helped me heal since I had no one else here and no money. we lived on the streets for a while together. I couldn't really do much I Was still healing, and he brought me food and kept me safe. since they took everything I had, we lived together on the streets for a while. at night it was cold, and he kept me alive and warm in his wings, and when I was better, I gave him almost everything I had. I still do I don't think I could ever truly repay him for what he's done.
