Chapter twenty-Five

Up in smoke

I stood, "Get up," I demanded. Will stood confused and slowly the rest followed.

"What are you planning?" Isha asked. I felt her warm chest on my shoulders as she stood behind me.

"We're going to find that burrow even if it takes all night. We're going to split into two groups: Melidani and Asper. Is it okay if you lead us so we don't get lost?" they agreed and my heart simmered with hope. "We're going to start in the circus, stay within it and then we can slowly spread out further around it. Cleo most of the burrows are near us right?" she nodded.

"We sweep those burrows to see where they lead and if it's not the desert we come right back and try another one. We're going to have someone stand guard at the entrance of the burrow and two go inside in case something goes wrong. Have your dragons close. We could move faster if they're small or if they keep to the skies. Avoid attention from the townspeople if possible. If you find the burrow send word to the other team."

"Yes, but how is the other group going to find them?" Cleo asked. "The burrows I mean it took a long time for me to be able to find one and the magic here is so powerful it'll be hard to differentiate them even with my training."

"So basically she said we're massively f-" Isha stopped short because of the look I gave her.

Melidani waved her hands violently. She signed something.

"She said that Khoi can help," asper translated, "she senses the magic flow where it's going, burrows as Cleo calls. they pull things through them putting them somewhere else and different places have different magic senses if you will. For dragons they smell different, for Khoi, he can tell where there's a magical pull. He could lead the second group. But she has no way of contacting the other group."

I taped my bracelet. "They have an intercom on them, call the others if you find it."

Asper frowned at me. I made a mental note to interrogate him about his suit later.

"What?" I asked.

"It's just they don't really blend in and you stand out too much." He said.

He was right I gave off a faint glow. I taped my helmet on and pressed where my ear would be, the small clear dot popped out.

Cleo, Melidani, and Will went off in another direction. Echo walked close to Melidani, and Khoi stayed with us. Melidani sighed and signed to Asper.

"no Dani I'm not leaving you without her we have to take Khoi so Echo can stay with you to protect you."

she frowned at him and signed faster.

he just smiled, "I know you can protect yourself but please for me?"

she shook her head and put her hand on echos head. the way she communicated with the dragons was fascinating she didn't say a word, and the dragons didn't speak sign language maybe Echo but Khoi was blind. but hey somehow all knew what she meant and followed willingly. He sighed but accepted her terms and Echo reluctantly did too.

Asper's jaw clenched as he watched Melidanies flowy hair disappear into the crowd.

"She'll be okay," I promised.

He smiled lightly like he just woke from a trance.

"Between them, I'd be worried about Will." I narrowed my eyes at him, my hand going towards my sword.

"What are we waiting for?" he raised his hands abruptly. "An invitation, let's go searching."

We searched tons of burrows and nothing came up. I dove into another borrow Khoi smelled out.  a broken flap against the large tent. Asper followed me and we walked a while in silence looking for any signs of the end.
