Chapter Fifteen
The Alidina Aisles
"Well," I said, "if it makes you feel better to tell me things about you, I can tell you why I'm here. Wouldn't that help?"
She shrugged "I don't see why it wouldn't."
I swallowed hard "well, um, my name is kiroa," I said. Um, I have wanted to become a dragon racer for a long time. Do you have that here?"
"Maybe it's like the old-time thingy started when the whole world did it like there were obstacle courses, and it was super competitive?"
"Yeah, that's kind of the gist of it," I said, "but I bet you know it's kinda really illegal, so...."
"Is it illegal?" she asked, surprised "it's not here."
"Really?" I asked, "Well, where do I come from on the island of fire in the western part of Sagamore, the small coast of Einoder?"
She froze. "you're from Einoder?"
"Yes?" I answered slowly.
She drew her bow on me. I stiffened. I couldn't remember her holding it before.
"Your people invaded and killed us, and you dare come here!" she yelled.
"What" I stuttered, "attacked. What are you talking about?"
"Your people!" she yelled, and pebbles fell from the cave roof "they attacked us unprovoked in their metal machines with their black dragons and those lightning sticks!"
"Cleo," I whispered, "don't yell." dust fell on my head.
"Oh, now you're trying to silence me! You're trying to play some trick, aren't you getting me alone and trying to trick me? Not This time, you're not getting anyone else from my family again!"
"Again? Cleo, I have no idea what you're talking about. Please don't yell, the cave is going to come down on top of us."
"NO!" she yelled, tears falling down her face "you took half of my people! Do not try to SILENCE ME!"
The cave began to crumble, larger rocks falling from where we came in.
I body-slammed her out of the way, the ceilings fell right where she stood seconds before.
She pushed me off of her, coughing. I thought she was going to kill me, but the ropes on my hands slackened.
"You better be telling the truth," she hissed as the rope fell. I grabbed her wrist and ran into the darkness.
We ran blindly with the ceiling crumbling above us. We followed the sound of Vietas laughing calls. It was getting harder to pinpoint where he was calling from. Harder to see and harder to breathe.
I turned to see the boulders as they fell from the ceiling behind us, dodging the falling rocks and coughing the dust out of our lungs.
The whole cave shook, threatening to collapse.
Vieta called for us. It got louder, and we rounded a corner as light poured in.
I pushed Cleo, "it's going to collapse!" I yelled, "jump!"
We threw out selves into the light as the cave crashed onto itself. I struggled to my feet, but Cleo grabbed my arms and pulled me up.
"I thought you couldn't help someone that they had to prove themselves."
"They do," she said, "and you have been proving yourself the entire time. When you tried to save your dragon when you told your friends to go on without you because you knew they would get hurt if they didn't listen, and when you tried to get me to calm down, and when you stayed with me and didn't run off and leave me behind telling me I had to jump. Instead of someone that begged for them to stay or run in the face of danger and did not run when it was only us, never asked for help when I told you about our costumes and told me about your people."
