Chapter Nine
Black dragons and broken glass
I walked on the small stepping stones leading up to the wrap around the porch. A two-person wooden swing hung on the patio. I ran my hand across the two cursive numbers on door 16.
I tried the door, and "it's locked," I said.
"Oh, my bad, sorry," he picked up one of the small potted plants on the step, "they all have a hidden key somewhere. Here"
He handed me the key. It wasn't anything special, just a silver key but something about it sent a jolt up my spine. I unlocked the door and stepped inside.
The front door went right into the living room with two couches
"This is so cool," I said as Kit came in behind me
"I haven't been in one of these cabins yet."
"These couches look like something in a grandma's house," I laughed, jumping on one "oh my god, they are so comfortable. I take it back. I love it!"
Kit laughed "come see the rest of it, sleeping beauty."
I kicked my legs up and rolled off the couch. I entered the small open kitchen: cabinets wrapped around two walls and a sink. With a small stove next to it, a wooden table, and matching chairs.
"I guess when you have a mess hall, you don't need much of a kitchen, huh?"
"Not really, no."
"These look like they're cut straight from the tree," I said, pulling out one of the chairs. "I'm loving this already."I ran my hand across the large wooden logs making up the house walls. Sunlight poured in through the many windows.
"I always wanted a house with big windows with a bunch of plants, and I'm rambling again."
"I like your rambling," Kit said, pushing his black hair back.
I rubbed the back of my neck "thanks, I guess."
"You're welcome, I guess," Kit laughed.
I made a face at him.
"Oh, what's that?" I said, pointing to a staircase against the wall. "Is that my bedroom? Oh, this does just keep getting cooler!" I ran up the stairs to a loft. There were six beds, all the same two were bunk beds, and the others were twins. Each had a large chest at the foot of the bed.
"Am I the only one here?" I asked, leaning over the railing to Kit in the kitchen.
"As far as I know, yeah."
the stairs creaked as Kit came up.
I went back and opened the massive round window. "These things are big enough for a dragon to fit through." my nerves about living alone died a little knowing Isha would be able to climb through.
That's when the Blood-curdling screech filled the camp.
"What was that?" I asked as we ran to the front door.
People started coming out of their cabins from all around. A rope fell a few feet away, and a bunch of kids came down.
The scream rang out again.
"It sounds like it's coming from the mess hall!" some yelled in the crowd.
Everyone started running towards the noise. Some older kids grabbed the young ones and dragged them back inside.
