Chapter Thirty-one
The gates of heaven
Verinde cowered behind where the owl just stood like she was still there.
"Verinde?" I asked, "you know what we need."
Their eyes flickered to me, they kept going back to the spot of the owl.
They nodded "this way" and turned her head back as they walked into the temple "you all need to come."
We went inside the crumbling temple, the walls were high and their columns had years of weathering on them. Some threatened to collapse like others already had. We walked past a statue of Veirnde, their heads held high and proud their wings spread out. much more intimidating but when you meet them they are kind and gentle.
My mind went back to when the owl was here when she demanded that they show us something.
"They were telling the truth," Isha said, "They really didn't hurt those people. Their minds couldn't handle it."
They stopped walking. Set on the wall was a mosaic of the celestial twins.
Verinde turned to us. "It's a doorway," De said, "it's the gateway to heaven, you have to go soon, the sun is almost gone. walkthrough here and you'll find yourself at Helios's throne. He's been waiting for you for a long time."
Before I could say a word, Verinde vanished in red smoke.
Asper and Avalia walked up to the glass mosaic to inspect it. Reeza and Echo sniffed around intently.
I wanted to go to it but it didn't feel real. It was like a dream. It was too easy, too good to be true. They just handed it to me like everything that we went through and they handed us the way to end it all on a silver platter. Part of me wanted to jump through to finally find my parents to end the shade's reign. To end the reign of Queen Hiraeth.
The other part wanted to run away. Asper put his hand up to the glass and before he touched it, it went right through. He looked back at us with wide eyes. He took a deep breath and walked through. It was only a few seconds before he came back.
"Verinde was right," he said and went back in. Echo chased after him. Avalia paused, waiting for me.
"Go," I said. She did and Reeza followed her.
Will stood next to me. "You should go," I said, "I'll be in after you."
"It seems that every time I leave your side you come stumbling back half-conscious or pass out in my arms. I'm never leaving your side again."
"Ugh, you're so clingy." I laughed teasing him but he was right and I found some strange comfort in his words.
He stood in front of me. I don't know why but at that moment I couldn't look into his eyes.
"Kiroa," he whispered. "Hey, dewdrop it's okay" he took me in a hug.
I melted and started crying.
"What if they're not there?" I sobbed. "What if we did this for nothing? What if I just sent them off the side of a cliff? I can't do this." I pulled away from him. I wanted to run out of the temple.
He took my hand gently and put his other hand on my cheek. They were freezing but it felt nice on my hot face.
"What if it goes right? What if this is the end? What if all we did together for the past months was worth it?"
He was crying too.
"Together?" I choked out.
"Together" he agreed.
