Chapter Seven
knives that cut space and time
I slapped a tree branch out of the way, "like seriously!" I yelled, "why does this have to happen," and my knees buckled.
I cupped my face in my hands "that was our only money for everything," I sobbed "we have nothing now I have nothing my parents are missing, and my home is burned down."
Will gently pulled my hands away. I kept staring at the ground, fists clenched as hot tears ran down my cheeks.
"Hey," he said softly, "I'm still here, so are Diago and Isha you have us. I'm not going anywhere, I promise."
My throat felt like I was trying to swallow a rock. I tried to breathe, but it came in small hyper-puffs. I was getting dizzy.
"No!" I screamed, "no, this isn't fair, I just want to go home, I just want to be with my family again! My friend could be dying, and I have no idea! I don't even know you; before, I didn't like you!"
His eyes dropped momentarily, but he smiled slightly "so well, get to know each other. Okay? Just try to breathe, kiroa. This isn't helping anyone. You're just getting even more hurt. We will find your parents. Hold your breath." he said gently, looking back at me. "Trust me?"
I took one last deep breath and held it tight. The panic slowly left my chest, slowly letting go so I could breathe again. I wiped the tears from my hot cheeks.
"Better?" he asked, his warm eyes never wavered, like a mother to her newborn baby.
I stood and trudged forward back to camp.
"How did you know to do that?" I asked.
Will wouldn't look at me, "my sister," he shrugged, "she gets those too. Like I said before, I'm not sure she does anymore. I haven't seen her for a long time, ever since I moved here. I wasn't able to see her. My grandparents can't come to visit, and I can't go back."
"you really love her, you must miss each other a lot."
He nodded, smiling "I really do."
We reached the clearing of the morning sun, kissing the treetops. Little dew drops cascade from leaf to leaf down the trees. I remembered that's what Will called me when I lost my memory for a bit. Dewdrop, I smiled in spite of myself.
We finally found the clearing again. Isha sat alone in the center. Diago was nowhere in sight. I looked at Will for the first time what crossed his face was something I never thought I see from him. His eyes wide, searching frantically. His breathing quickened. Fear crept fast into him.
"Isha!" he yelled, running up to her " Isha, where is he? What happened? Are you okay? Where's Diago?"
She lifted her head from under her wings. "He went looking for you two. I didn't even know you left, and then Diago was getting all jittery thinking that something happened when we woke up, so he went searching for you two in the sky. I stayed here in case you came back." she glanced around "get on," she said as she uncurled and circled us.
We climbed on. Will sat rigid, his hands locked onto me as I'll abruptly vanish from him too.
We flew around and circled past the dragon nip field, where he was nowhere to be found.
"There!" Will shouted as he pointed to a small clearing not too far from our own. "I just saw at least I think that's him. something large is moving around!" Isha turned and flew into the clearing.
When we landed, everyone was ready to fight. Will had his armor on, Isha's throat lit up, ready to torch someone, I drew my sword.
A crowd of people surrounding Diago
