Chapter Eight
Prophecies are too complicated
"Um hi," I said and waved.
"You're Penelope?" Will asked the little girl, "No offense but I thought you'd be," he paused, "taller."
"You mean you thought I was going to be some old nasty hag hidden away in some mountain cave or a beautiful enchantris?" she said wiggling her fingers "not everyone is who you think they are." She stood up and stared at me. I looked away.
"Penelope?" Mia said, "can you tell them what you know of the prophecy? Please."
She started humming to herself then started digging in a wooden trunk at the foot of one of the two bunk beds. She threw things all over the place.
"Aha!" she exclaimed, holding up a blue marble notebook. She quickly flipped through the pages. "Here," she said, sitting on the ground again she gestured for us too.
We did; she placed the book in the center of our circle. On the small page were so many scribbles and little side notes.
"I wrote this a while ago" She pointed to the middle. I could barely see the words written just like in the painting. She read.
Seek the sandy sea
There you shall see
The desert flame holds the key
When Painted in gold, she shall see
Those who seek may they see
The wandering eyes of verinde
"I've been thinking about this one a lot." She pointed you to the first sentence "I think I figured it out, it's telling you where to go, obviously."
"Yeah obviously," Will said, rubbing the back of his neck.
Penelope stared blankly at him, "that's what I said."
"Oh no, I didn't mean" he sighed "never mind."
Penelope shrugged "well anyway I'm pretty sure it means the desert the sandy sea it's like an endless ocean it's the only one that makes sense there's no sea that's made of sand beside the desert and it makes sense with this one" she pointed to the third sentence "the desert flame holds the key I have no idea what it means but it's gotta be in the desert it only makes sense."
I nodded "yeah that makes sense thank you did you get any more of it?"
She shook her head violently "nope just that."
"Well okay. I guess we will go to the desert?" I said throwing up my hands.
"I guess we do." Will said, "We better get going then it's a long way."
We thanked Penelope and through a lot of scolding from Mia to clean and the kids realizing who we were. Signing autographs and taking pictures we finally made it out of the house starting on the path back.
For the first time since leaving home, I was full of energy bouncing on the balls of my feet as we walked. I couldn't contain myself. For the first time, I knew where they could be. I had a sign Something to follow.
"The desert is at least a two-day ride from here," Mia told us "I'll give you anything we can spare but it's not much. The trees are dying in the orchard and the fruits produce less food now. I'm not sure how much longer they have left. You'll need to stop probably halfway through."
