Chapter Twenty-Two
Circus rings
So the air wasn't gloomy at all after those fun little facts about my wild dream. Seems like anytime I open my mouth now everyone stops smiling.
We gathered our things silently. Isha didn't even try to steal things out of the bathroom. She claimed it wasn't worth her goddess' hands to touch anything. Dramatic but I agreed this place was gross. I wished we could have stayed in the super nice ones but it was too expensive
the tent was lit up all red and white with spotlights blaring from all over. People gathered to watch the sideshows walk around outside.
People walked on stilts so high they towered over our dragons. We watched Dragons jump through fire hoops and my heart sank watching them perform. They were so sad but jumped anyway. All kinds of creatures danced for the people inside their small cages.
A centaur shot arrows three at a time through flaming hoops and into hay bales.
We walked by a siren or a mermaid. She was sitting in a tiny tank only big enough for her to turn around in. Her eyes were filled with sadness. I thought she was going to cry but I guess it wouldn't have made a difference for her.
Her companion mermaids sat on cramped buckets next to her singing stunning songs about the open seas and sailor's ships. They sang of rough waves and flying sea birds. Of the times they had in their freedom.
Some brushed their immensely long hair past their ears with their webbed hands. Scales encased their whole bodies opening to the human skin on their back and closing into the fishtails of bright colors.
We walked on, gigantic dragons curled around one another with chains clipped on their necks and legs basically anywhere they could fit even at the base of their wings.
My heart shattered I clamped my fists. "Before we leave, remind me to free everything." I Cringely whispered.
"Agreed" Will said as he scowled.
"Completely," Cleo said. I could hear her words get caught in her throat.
"How's Diago?" I looked back at him curled up tight on Will's shoulders. he growled at anything that passed.
I wasn't surprised he was angry; it was just the first time I've seen him truly aggressive.
Will put his hand on his now small head "let's hurry this up."
We agreed and went inside.
The walls reached up high into the sky and large lights hung from the ceiling beams. a huge ring of dirt was in the center surrounded by rows of seats.
It reminded me of the arena at home and at the camp like it was planned off it. But these places were cruel in what they did. Their actions were much worse than racing dragons.
The seats were almost completely empty.
"Where should we sit?" I asked.
"Maybe the top?" Will said, "we could have a better vantage point."
"I think we should split up." Cleo offered.
"Again? No, the last time we did that we almost died." I said I remember when I lost them and the ground opened.
"The last time we did it we found the tent really fast." Cleo pointed out.
I sighed "But it's so big, what if something happens?" I said.
"These places can get super loud no one could hear you, especially us if we're not near each other."
"I have an idea" Cleo went behind the seats and crouched.
