a/n: the SAT was actually p easy ngl (also live video of the song in the sidebar because I'm seeing them in 20 days and I'm getting pumped!!)
"You know, Tonight Alive would be a good band to make out to."
My eyes widened as I looked over at Calum, who was grinning widely. "No!"
"Come on, you know it's true."
"No," I answered promptly, before thinking about it a little. "Well, I guess. Why aren't you with Mikey, then? They're on next!"
Calum shrugged. "I don't know where he is," he answered, swinging an arm around my shoulders.
"Okay," I answered, shrugging his arm off. "You're elbowing people behind us."
"Oh. Sorry."
We stood there in the crowd, waiting for the screen to lift and for Tonight Alive to come onstage. In the dim lighting, I looked over at Calum, who was absently biting at his lip ring and looking up at the stage. It wasn't his first concert - I had dragged him to far too many - but it was the first in which he was actually in the audience beside me. Usually, he stayed close to the bar, waiting for the bands to finish so that he could complain the whole way home about the loud music.
I liked the way the stage lights highlighted the more prominent features of his face, such as his bright eyes, his cheekbones, and his full lips. I was well past the point of being infatuated with the boy; I was simply mesmerised. Something had clicked inside me and suddenly everything made so much sense. Granted, I was still feeling terrible because of the Michael situation, but... Maybe I'm not so against it anymore. It made me realise my true feelings towards Calum, and that's what mattered.
Suddenly, the lights around us dimmed even more before practically exploding into a plethora of greens and yellows, flashing around the stage and onto the crowd. Everyone was cheering, Calum and I included, and started going absolutely wild when the curtain lifted to reveal four of the members on stage, already playing music. I recognised it as their song The Ocean, grinning eagerly as I watched them jump around the stage.
Then, Jenna came onto stage in her green haired, wide smiled glory, and I didn't think I could cheer any louder. She had so much stage presence and she gave her everything in each performance. I had seen Tonight Alive before, on Warped Tour a few years ago, and I was surprised to note that they had gotten even better over the past few years. I didn't think that was possible.
Throughout the song, I sang along loudly, uncaring of my surroundings. We were all doing the same anyways. Often, I'd look over at Calum and note with slight satisfaction that he was singing along as well. Sometimes he'd catch my eye and grin, before turning his attention back to the stage.
A few songs later, Jenna took a little pause and talked to us, asking us how we were doing and such. "Okay guys, this next song is about being broke and enjoying the little things in life! It's called Starlight!"
My heart stopped. I didn't know they were going to play that one! It's my favourite!
Before I could even freak out, I felt someone grip my arm, and turned to see Calum smiling widely at me. "Your song!"
I felt my heart do a funny flip at the expression on his face and at the fact that he remembered. Unable to answer for a solid five seconds, i basked in the delighted expression on his face, his warm skin upon mine, and the sound of my favourite song being played live filtering through my ears.
So, I did what any person would do (well, almost). With my hands on his cheeks, I pulled him close, pressing his lips against mine without any hesitation. In that moment, I didn't care about Mikey, about people around us, or about stupid technicalities. All I cared about was Calum's lips and the lyrics but honestly I'm happy, I don't wanna worry resonating through me.
My biggest surprise of the night was that Calum kissed me back. It started slow and tentative, but just as the chorus of the song kicked in, the pace of our kiss flew up. We were shamelessly making out, our bodies pressed up against each other's in the tightness of the crowd and Calum's fingers interlocking with mine. I leaned my head to the side, deepening our kiss, and he sighed contentedly against my mouth.
We were at it throughout the whole song, our tongues dancing with one another's to the beat. We pulled apart just as Jenna sang the final lines, don't want to say goodnight, let's live it up, I'm lost tonight under your starlight, searching for something in each other's eyes. Calum's russet eyes were wide and curious but lacking hatred or disgust, which was the biggest relief to me. Our hands were still interlocked, and his other hand was against my chest to support himself against the hustle and bustle of the crowd. We were just stood there, staring at one another in confusion and curiosity as the next song picked up. When the song started, Calum snapped out of it, shaking his head and taking a step back. "This can never happen again," he murmured, his eyes wide, but I could barely hear it over the words 'just friends' being sung loud and clear throughout the venue.
How fitting.
