Engaged in their bickering and harmless arguments, it took about an hour for Manik and Nandini to tour around the garden. Sharing their childhood stories, they reached near the fountain.
"You actually did that?" With her hand on her stomach, she settled on the iron bench and tried really hard to hold back her laughter but failed miserably.
"Bas haan, it wasn't that funny, atleast not for him." Manik grumbled watching her laugh at him but then he couldn't scold her because he liked that sound, doesn't matter if he is the subject.
While walking around Nandini shared that how obedient she was as a kid and nobody ever scolded her. Manik couldn't believe that and somehow blurted the punishments he received from his mother because of his pranks and ended up sharing one of them where he had added laxatives in his cousin's food.
"Yes not for him. Poor thing! But why did you do that?" Nandini chuckled and Manik's expressions turned grim remembering the reason.
His childhood
Once Navoday, Sampurna's eldest son had created a chaos in the house just because little Madhu collided with him while running and the food he was carrying fell on his clothes. He'd scolded and twisted her ear and then complained how she has spoiled his new clothes. It was a mistake but she was just an eight year old. Sampurna didn't spare her and when Kasturi tried intervening she was insulted and asked to wash Navoday's clothes. Kasturi had a little hope that Prakash would stand up for their daughter, atleast for the fact that Navoday had hurt her, but he didn't.
Standing in the corner little Manik saw his sister crying and his innocent heart cried too seeing the burn mark on her hand. The dal fell on her too but none noticed. He was just a five and a half year old kid but the fire in him to punish Navoday was limitless. The respect in him for Navoday as his elder brother vanished watching his mother's helpless face and tears in her sister's eyes.
"Don't cry." Little Manik sat near little Madhu and wiped her tears with his small hands. Squeezing out the toothpaste, he applied it gently on the back of her palm.
"Burning?" She nodded and he blew air on her wound with a 'phoo' sound making her smile. He was a cutie pie.
Kasturi watched them with a smile and went away to check on little Manas as she heard his wail.
Little Manik looked up at his sister's eyes that were still filled with tears. "You don't need to cry, now he will cry. I promise." Little Manik said glaring at nothing in particular.
"Badi maa will again scold us. Navoday bhaiya is very strong." Little Madhu was against it, fearing the consequences and touched her ear that was still paining. She didn't want her brother to face any such punishment.
"Didi, maa says we shouldn't be scared from the people who do wrong with us because nothing is stronger than the truth. He hurt you and then he complained about you to badi maa. If he is strong then why didn't he tell that in front of his mother. Because he knew he was wrong and a weakling."
"What will we do?"
"Tit for tat. You are hurting because of him and now he will feel the pain too. Just do as I say." Little Madhu nodded feeling a little happy with his brother's support.
