15th August, 1995.

Manik parked his scooter and wiped his moist forehead with his shirt sleeve before picking up the grocery bags and pressing the bell. Since it was a holiday, the market was over-peopled than usual and his bad habit of forgetting kerchiefs before stepping out of the house gave him a tough time in managing in scorching heat.

Renu opened the door with a warm smile and took the bags from him. She apologized observing his tired face as she was too busy to come along for help since it was a holiday for all the men, which only meant more work for her.

“It’s fine. Just check if everything is there.” He said politely and walked towards his room for freshening up.

Anil, Prakash and Parvati were busy discussing about the booking of the banquet hall and other arrangements needed to be done for the bride’s family whereas Manas chose to play with the kids so it was Manik who was left to go for grocery shopping and even had good knowledge about it.

After entering in his room that he shared with his brother, he took off his shirt and vest quickly and dashed into the common washroom to take a bath, the sweat was irritating him.

He sat down on the bed wearing his lowers to rest till lunch. A disturbing knock on the door and he had to quickly wear his fresh vest before Renu stepped in with some refreshing drink and Manik was thankful to her.

“We had a chat with Nandini and her family regarding the rituals and other stuff. Are you coming with us for the shopping? We were planning to buy a few things for your marriage as well.” Renu asked, since he was free.

Manik contemplated over her words. He wanted to talk to Nandini and today evening seemed the best opportunity when all will be out. “Is it necessary for me to come? I wanted to rest.” Renu smiled at him in understanding and made her way out.

“Mami, actually, can I know what are you buying for her?” Manik felt a bit awkward to ask this but concealed it well. He never intruded in these matters before. “Few suits and other essentials.” Taking out his wallet, he forwarded some cash to her and said,

“This is for her things, if you want more then I’ll give. Also don’t buy the nuptial chain, I’ve talked to one of my known jeweller so I’ll see to it.” After the ring being out of her size and not of his choice, he decided to buy the nuptial chain himself.

Renu took the cash with a small smile and asked, “Any color that I should look for specifically?” She raised her brows in teasing, enjoying the new side of her nephew cum brother. She knew he definitely had a loving side which he had hidden somewhere being reserved but he never failed to be the most caring person she’d known in this family.

“Purple. It suits her.” He mentioned quietly remembering how heavenly she appeared on the day of their engagement and Renu walked out asking him to come for lunch. He sighed and fished out the envelope he’d started carrying with him nowadays.
