One week later...

It was only when the sun had begun to disappear behind the night sky that Ben had begun to fidget. Jack on the other hand was pumped up. They'd gone through the plan twice and the primary objective was to escape without raising an alarm.

With the help of a table knife which they'd made useful by sharpening against some rocks, they'd been able to cut a hole through the fence at a secluded part of the compound where all inmates were forced to put in at least five hours of good manual labour.

Within a week, Jack had been able to cut a hole fit enough for the both of them to shimmy through. Their only worry would be the guards hanging around the final fence. The other ones around would be easy to sneak past, at least that was what they wanted to believe. Jack had reminded Ben, once they were past the first fence, there would be no turning back. Neither one of them would be responsible for the other and Ben had no choice but to agree with it.

By the time the rest of the inmates had dropped their shovels and washed the dirt off their hands, Jack and Ben were sprinting across the field, using the blanket of darkness provided by the night as their only cover. Stopping whenever a patrol car drove a few metres past them and later jogging down the expanse of land towards the second fence, they could see freedom waiting for them at the other side.

To Jack, he was the only one on the run. His prize? The smile on his daughters face again. It was the only thing that drove him to continue running even when he felt his lungs burning from the lack if oxygen.

Ducking behind a small thicket of bushes, Ben and Jack watched as a security officer begun to approach where they were hiding. Silently, they watched as the officer begun to do undo his pants to take a piss in the bushes close to them and Ben looks away, irritated.

Jack, meanwhile had rounded to the other side of the guard, the knife in his hand gleaming under the moonlight rays. Before Ben could attempt to stop him, Jack had lunged at the guard and driven the blade into his back. A strangled groan escapes the guards lips as he elbows Jack.

With blood streaming out of his uniform, the guard reaches for his gun tucked in his girdle but Jack sees it coming and tackles him to the ground then stabs him numerous times.

Bile forms quickly in Ben's throat and he throws up the little he'd had for dinner, his throat burning. By the time he had stopped throwing up and looked up, Jack was partially smeared in blood and the guard was no longer moving.

Under the moonlight Jack looked like something out of a horror movie.

"C'mon let's go," he says, pulling out the guards rifle and jogging in the opposite direction where the darkness was thicker. Within minutes they had gotten to the second fence. One more fence left. Easily scaling over that fence and landing safely on their feet, they continue jogging towards the last fence. The closer they got to their final obstruction from freedom, the faster Jack walked, his eyes trained on the guards at the last fence.

Stopping just where the stage lights had been turned on, Jack takes the rifle, aims it at one of the guards closest to them and after a few seconds, the gun goes off, alerting the other guards. There's a shout from the far end of the field and bullets start raining in on them. Ducking behind a pile of rocks, Jack continues firing at the guards, slowly hitting them one after the other.

Ben was impressed but scared. Jack looked like a maniac.

Soon the gunshots stop and they stealthily crawl out of their hiding place. The moment they get to the fence, the sirens go off. Cursing under his breath, Jack begins to take off his orange jumpsuit and using the knife, he slits it in half and uses it to wrap around an extent of his arm as some sort of padding, leaving his fingers exposed.
