It really was tragic.Being at Amanda's funeral, that is. Most students on campus had showed up to pay their respect. She had been one of the most popular people on campus and what a shame things had ended this way.
Tina, her aunt and the rest of her family, were all standing in front of her casket which had been closed shut, tears rolling down their faces as they silently stood around it not sure of what next to do. They'd cried everything out the moment they'd been told up to this very day, so it was understandable to say that there were no tears left.
Tearing my gaze away from them, I feel a small pressure on my lower back and turn to see Xavier staring at me. He too had cried. We'd all cried, especially when some of us had gone up to say a few words.
The air was cold, thin and pinching. A small gust of wind fanned out across the nearly empty cemetery, rustling my dress lightly. I reached down and smoothened out the creases, holding it in place.
Striding across the soft field, towards Tina and her son, I embrace them both once again, holding onto Tina the longest. From the speech Tina had given, she and Amanda had a close bond but it was unfortunate that Tina never crossed Amanda's mind when she was thinking of committing the act.
It was a let down.
"May the Lord strengthen you," I said, my voice a subtle whisper as the dryness in my throat begun to spread. Her eyes glimmers with unshed tears but she wipes them away with the napkin in her hand and offers us a smile laced with pain.
"Thank you. At least now she'll be resting with God," Tina said. Fighting back a frown, a thought came to mind, a very scary one at that.
Amanda had never accepted Christ into her life before she left. My stomach churned at the thought alone. Did that mean-? No, I blinked back the thought. The bible spoke of how no one would be a member of Christ if one never accepted Christ and turned from his or her ways.
The answer was evident and I couldn't help but feel even more guilty. I was probably the only Christian friend she had and instead of bringing the good news to her, I'd skipped it and now she was gone.
Her fate? I didn't want to say.
I looked around at the mass number of people who had showed up to pay their final respect. Did they also know Christ? What if something were to happen to them too and once again we'd all be gathered here to pay our last respect.
My eyes watered and my stomach churned almost violently.
"Hey, are you okay?" The same lower pressure is felt on my back and I stare up at Tina, her son and Xavier who are watching me curiously. Wiping the tears that were threatening to fall, I nod but Xavier doesn't buy it even though the rest do.
"She's at peace now, okay?" Tina says, embracing me and another round of tears begin pouring out of my eyes. I don't hold it back but continue to cry into her shoulder until I'd begun to feel somewhat better, the sick feeling still in my stomach.
Bidding goodbye, Xavier and I head out of the cemetery hand in hand. Shivering a bit, I mentally chide myself for not coming with a jacket like the rest had, instead I'd taken a shawl thinking the small glimmer of sunlight I'd seen would stretch out across the sky but now the sky looked laden with rain.
