April was nervous and worried. Her father still wasn't done with the speech he was giving Tristan and even though Tristan did everything he could to be one hundred percent serious, April could see right through the facade he'd set up. He was tired and it was all her fault. He didn't have to be one at the wrong end o the stick.
Evelyn, unlike her father who was pissed off, was more of disappointed than angry. The atmosphere had changed to a very much sober one. It was a good thing Tristan was staying for the night. If April knew her parents well, they wouldn't send him packing, they'd let him stay and then after that give her a long talk. To her, she was way past that age, the era of their long stern talks followed by days of disappointed looks pointed in her direction.
After what felt like years, the front door swings open and a tired looking Tristan walks in, the confidence which he'd formerly put on worn out and no longer visible. He didn't even look up at April to give her a small reassuring smile, all he did was walk in and head upstairs.
"What did you tell him?" April fires at her dad, anger clearly visible in her eyes but he doesn't respond and walks off into the kitchen. Doing her best to bite down on her tongue, she races up the stairs and into Tristan's room. On entering, she sees him standing with his back to her and his phone pressed to his ear. Not that she meant to eavesdrop but the call had all been centred on whatever it was her father had said.
"You're leaving?" she asks, astonished and hurt. He turns around, an unreadable expression on his face. "Yeah, what'd you expect was going to happen? Your parents clearly don't want me in your life and if they already feel that way, there's no way I'm going on one knee," he replies, holding his gaze with her.
Before she could even plead with him to wait for a while, he holds up a hand, stopping her. "I already called a friend of mine who lives in town. He's willing to have me stay over for the night, so don't worry," he adds, pressing his lips into a thin line.
She wanted to scream, cry and run away but all she could feel herself doing was staring at him. Was that it? They were over?? Just like that? She waited for the tears to come but they never did.
"Please don't go. Give me sometime and I'll talk things out with my parents," she pleaded and he turns to her, a torn expression on his face. "I've already made up my mind April," he replies firmly and she winces at the sound of her name. When was the last time he'd called her name? Three months ago when he had given her the promise ring.
"How come you never told your parents about me?" he asks, studying her face, searching for answers but she kept darting her eyes around, and trying to avoid his gaze until regret and embarrassment forced them down. Inside she was hurt but she was sure it was nothing compared to what he was feeling.
"It's not like I never wanted to, it's just my parents have always wanted me to do things the way they want it to be done and I guess when I met you, I didn't feel like I wanted to do it their way anymore," she replies.
"What'd you mean?"
" I used to have feelings for someone else, years before I moved to New York and things didn't really go as planned. For some reason my parents and his parents envisioned us to getting married. I knew that if my parents found out that I was dating someone else, they'd flip out and make a big deal out of it, just like they did, " she replies, massaging her temple.
"So you knew this was going to be a waste of time and you never told me?" he asks, his voice suddenly dangerous. "I didn't think it would be a waste of time, I just hoped that by the time I got back home, I would find a way to tell them about... us and that their reasoning would have changed," she replies.
