There were so many wires.
Thick ones, skinny ones.
Some attached to sticky pads upon skin.
Some slid down the throat.
And they all just sat there,
Surrounding you.
Your eyes were cracked as if you were aware.
You weren't.
I touched you and it felt empty.
I looked at you, and I didn't see you.
My mask was falling down my face; sticky and wet.
Your heart monitor beeped.
You breathed too deeply.
You weren't there; I know that.
Maybe you stood above yourself looking down.
Your soul trying to breathe itself back into you.
I couldn't help but jump.
Are you there?
