Pool of Shadows

Nights were the worst.

Nights were when I curled into myself and wept for things I didn't know.

I watched the night between my fingertips and saw a million things.

Men clad in dark armor, swords in their hands.

Monsters with gruesome faces made of waste.

Creatures that resembled humans but crawled like beasts.

Nights were always the worst for me.

Nightmares left me screaming for daylight to come.

Because in the darkness anything can happen,

And shadows leaked into the night.

I closed all my doors and jumped far away from the soiled hole beneath my bed.

Nightlights lit up every outlet,

And every night I lay in bed covered up to my nose and eyes wholly open.

I watched the darkness watch me, waiting for me to cave

And close my eyes.

I curled in my feet and fell asleep.
