Chapter 1: Game on

Sonic awoke with a groan. Dayight had seeped in under his blinds and landed contemptly on his bed. Sonic hated getting up, moving his aching bones and muscles with half closed eyes - it wasn't for him. He rushed through his morning routine, brushing his quills into place - a tedious task - after showering and before putting on his usual gloves, socks and shoes.

Sonic suspected Tails was still asleep, leaving him to make breakfast. Sonic trudged downstairs, trying not to make any loud noises, and began to make breakfast - it was more just grabbing two cereal bars from the cupboard and grabbing a glass before setting beside a carton of apple juice for Tails.

Sonic then took a small piece of paper from a stack Tails had set out months ago so Sonic could leave a note in the mornings or nights if Tails was asleep or wasn't there, telling the anxious fox where he was. Sonic then took a cereal bar and walked out of the house. He couldn't dash in the city unless it was to save people from any danger at all.

Sonic was careless with his speed and so many skirts and dresses had gone up due to the sheer force of the wind resistance he left behind. It had gotten to the point where the police were involved. Thankfully, Knuckles had bailed him out due to his 'I owe you' mannerism. Knuckles was a good person.

Sonic didn't know what to do however, the streets were bustling with mobians, the buzz of conversations was almost intimidating. The streets weren't as busy as they normally were, with 10-28 people on each street - Yes Sonic had counted -, making it easier to walk around. Most shops were closed aside from the odd Cafè or supermarket. Sonic didn't really mind though, most Mobians were very lazy in nature, everything would be opening by 10am.

Sonic then caught glimpse of a familiar hedgehog; ebony in colour and streaked in a scarlet red. He was entering a newly opened cafè. Sonic wasn't surprised, Shadow often ate out to get away from his roommate. Shadow found everyone agitating but tried to be polite to most people nonetheless. Sonic wasn't part of this majority however. Not that he cared. He loved to annoy Shadow more than he loved racing him.

Sonic made his way into the cafè, looking for his moody, self-proclaimed rival. He spotted the hedgehog at a table. Upon making his way to Shadow's table, he slammed both hands down infront of Shadow to make his presence known. "Faker." He simply greeted as he looked through the menu. "You're in a good mood today." Sonic grinned "No. Too tired to bicker with the likes of you." Shadow grumbled "awww Shadow! You really do like me enough to invest energy into me!" Sonic teased "No. You ruin my mornings, afternoons and nights. It takes energy to not tear you limb from limb and bury your body in Iceland." Shadow passive-aggressively stated.

Sonic dramatically threw his hand on his heart, as if he had been shot. "Shadow how could you!" He dramatically exclaimed as he fell back onto a seat, pushing himself in. "You know you love me." Sonic grinned "You are mistaking me for the pink hedgehog that gapes at your every move and follows you like a common cold." Shadow nonchalantly stated.

Someone cleared their throat and the two turned to see a White, grey and pink fox looking at them. "Oh! Hey Sage!" Sonic smiled at the younger boy "hiya!" He beamed back "How's life treating you?" Sonic smiled "Well... Nexus is upset with me at the moment." "Aww He'll come around! He likes you, a lot." Sonic grinned "Anyways! Can I take your orders-" He suddenly stopped "Wait- Shadow? How the-" "Don't. He just waltsed over." Shadow rolled his eyes "I'll have my usual coffee." "Oh! I'll have some toast please!" Sonic butted in. "For that, you can pay." Shadow growled

"Chaos, I will. You definitely need coffee." Sonic turned his head, sighing. "It'll take around seven minutes!" Sage smiled before disappearing. "Suprised you haven't walked out yet." Sonic laughed "So your goal was to get me to walk out of a cafè?" Shadow snorted "No, but it is expected. Remember when you stormed out of Sage's 18th birthday?" Sonic laughed "For a  twenty-year-old, you have the temper of a two-year-old." "That was on you." Shadow growled

The two continued to bicker until Sage awkwardly placed their orders between them accompanied by an awkward mutter of 'enjoy'. Shadow then swiftly finished his coffee before walking out, Sonic in tow with his toast in hand after he had placed a $20 note on the table - he knew he was over paying but he wanted to support business.

"Chao garden." Shadow stated after awhile. "But that's boring!" Sonic whined "Exactly. Now goodbye." Shadow smiled bitterly as he quickened his pace "C'mon Shadsss I'm bored." Sonic groaned "Grow up Sonic. Go get a job." "I have a job. I'm a 'Hero'. Every heard of it?" "Your criminal record says otherwise." Shadow smirked "Oh you're reading my criminal record now?" Sonic teased "It was left on my desk for some reason." Shadow huffed "Read through it as I was putting it back in the archives."

Sonic continued to tease the poor hedgehog, not allowing how open Shadow was being a second of rest.
