All exams were due to end on Thursday, students of Jordans High were ecstatic; that ‘close-to-holidays’ feeling was thick in the air, only three papers were left both in the Junior and senior secondary arms.

Every senior student uncharacteristically started showing leniency, even the most fearsome teachers were a bit laid back this period; the approaching Easter holidays had started rubbing off on everyone.

Even more surprising to David was Essien who had arranged for a picnic for all his classmates after today papers.

“What’s the occasion?” David had asked him

“Nothing much”, he had replied “let us just take a chill pill today”

Everyone anticipated this special ‘picnic’ with much fervour.

Immediately they were all done with the day papers, Essien brought all his classmates to the town’s amusement park and barely fifteen minutes in, he wanted to leave on the excuse that his parents had called for him.

“What do you mean you have to leave?” David asked, his eyes boring into Essiens’

“I ...” Essien faltered for a bit while avoiding David’s eyes, “look, my mom called for me and it is urgent”

“Is everything alright?” Tony inquired concernedly.

“Everything is fine” Essien replied rather irritably.

This was the part he hated in this ‘grand’ scheme Chidinma had come up with, the questions were pretty unnerving.

“Don’t worry everything is fine, I’ll be back if there’s still time” he said, reassuring his classmates.

Immediately Essien managed to extradite himself from his classmates, he heaved a sigh of relief and phoned Chidinma.

“I’m out” he told her

“Fine, next phase, meet me at the bus stop” she replied over the phone, “and avoid being too conspicuous”

Approximately three minutes later, Essien found himself next to Chidinma in a bus heading further down-town with David’s uncle residence as their final destination.
Essien found it hard to believe that he actually subscribed to this scheme.

“So who is going to do the talking?”  He asked “because I'm n-- ”

“Chill I’ll be the one doing the talking, all of you have to do is just confirm everything I’ll say” Chidimna retorted testily.

Essien stared at her; this girl was scaring the shit out of him, the length at which she could go just to achieve her aim, he sighed and looked out the window once more; women were dangerous creatures.

Some minutes later, they arrived at David’s uncle home and they were both welcomed by his mom who was surprised at the unexpected visitation.

Immediately, Chidimna delved into reason they visited, she started on how David had started becoming less serious because of a girl, how he has been influenced negatively by his new girlfriend and on on she went with Essien affirming to every word she uttered with a either a nod of his head or a word of verification with a tinge of guilt pricking his heart unceasingly.

David’s mom had an unsightly expression by the time they were done.

“Are you sure of all this?” She asked looking at Essien in particular, he was her son’s best friend right from childhood so she had to believe what they had just said but she found it hard.

“Essien why didn’t you tell me about this earlier?”

“I-- I didn’t know it will be this serious” Essien stuttered, his eyes on the ground.
