Thursday approached quickly which delighted everyone, everyone was chatty, anticipating the holidays.
Usually, rules could be bent during this period but not broken entirely.

The last paper was economics, a subject David had never been fond of.
Even during the examinations, the teachers were all lenient, giving room for people like Elvis to take advantage of the situation.

"Dave" Elvis whispered forcefully for the third straight time in four seconds trying to get his attention.

David leaned back into his chair, exasperated by the constant interruptions.

"Which other number?" He asked

"Number 25, I seem to have forgotten it"
Elvis replied apologetically.

David looked at the question, at least this one was easy for him, he tried whispering back the answer to Elvis when one of the teachers caught him red-handed.

"David and Elvis" the teacher called out,
"do you want me to change your seats?'

"Please don't, we will behave" Elvis pleaded almost immediately the words left the teacher's mouth.

A few people sniggered at him, David just rolled his eyes, he did not care even if he sat at the field, he just wanted to be done with the exams.

"Sit and behave yourselves" the teacher reprimanded.

Thirty minutes later, everyone was done with their papers, the term had officially come to an end, and everyone was joyous.

The principal gathered everyone for a heartfelt farewell speech for the term.

"The term has come and gone and once again the rest that is due us after all our toiling has arrived", Mr. Agbabowaye started.

"But that doesn't mean we should wallow in laxity during the holidays, I deeply urge everyone to constantly engage in any academic activity to keep our minds sharpened, Till we meet again, have a great time"

The students all dispersed, some already heading home, others hanging out to chat .

Most of the senior students were helping out the teachers to do some work while the others ensured there was still some order within the school premises.

David was hooked up with the principal very much to his displeasure than anything else.

With every step he took, questions like
"How's your mom?"

"Are you still in contact with your dad?"

Each question becoming more unbearable than the last,  David was almost on the brink of crying; it was torture.

A few minutes later, the principal received a call and with the sigh of relief David exhaled, you could be sure it could be heard from another galaxy.

Just as he was about to sneak out on the excuse of trying to give Mr. Agbabowaye privacy, he was called back immediately.

"Iroma" The principal had called, "your mom wants to speak with you"

David stopped completely in his tracks, he turned back to the principal, surprise etched on his face.

He walked back and took the mobile phone from the principal.

"Hello," David said into the receiver

"David" his mom's voice sounded from the speaker.

"What's up?" He asked

"Are you done with exams?"She asked

'Yes I am"

"I want you to come over to St. Catherine's hospital right now"
And before David could ask what happened she hung up, leaving him in deep suspense.

"What's the problem?" The principal asked
David explained things to him and they were both in wonder of what could have happened.

"Alright then, get moving, I'll call Essien to help"

Half an hour later, David arrived at the hospital, he walked into the reception hall.

The reception desk stood in the centre, a beacon of order amidst the chaotic energy. Nurses and administrative staff hurriedly attended to the needs of those seeking information or assistance.

David approached hesitantly, feeling small and insignificant in the midst of the commotion.

"Excuse me," he mumbled, trying to catch the attention of a nurse behind the desk. She barely acknowledged him, preoccupied with a flood of phone calls and paperwork.

Determined to find his mother, David wove through the crowd, his eyes scanning each face for a familiar expression of concern.
Just as he was about to find someone's phone to call her, a soft touch on his arm made him startle.

"David, there you are," his mother's voice, laced with exhaustion and relief, washed over him. She enveloped him in a tight embrace.

"What happened?" David asked, his eyes laced with worry.

His mom sighed and rubbed her forehead for a while, but this gesture alone only helped heighten the suspense David was already in.

"Tell me" David pleaded

"It's Oliver" she replied, her eyes on him
David recoiled slowly in perplexity.

'Oliver? What had he done again'
David wondered.

But before he could come up with possibilities, his mom explained everything in just a few words.

"He committed suicide"

"Suicide!!" David repeated in surprise.

"Yes, he shot himself through the head, people heard the shot and rushed him to the hospital and I was contacted through his phone to get here"

"He's dead?" David asked, still finding it hard to believe all this.

"Yes" His mom replied her eyes a bit watery now.

David took his mom into his embrace, of course, she had loved Oliver despite his barbaric personality, but he didn't know how to feel himself.

He despised his stepdad at some point but that was all, now he committed suicide he wondered why.

"He left a note though" his mom mumbled.

"A note?" David asked in wonder, "What note?"

His mom brought out a paper from her purse and handed it over to him.

He took the note in sheer curiosity to find out what was inside.
