"You're not letting me go to work!" I shouted; Walter chortled but my death glare shut him up. Maggie sighed before rolling her eyes, "Don't you fucking do that! Don't roll your eyes at me like a moody teenager!"
"What do you want me to say (y/n)? They're gonna be at your work! What's the point of you staying here if you're just gonna get killed somewhere else?" She retaliated.
"I need that money!" I insisted. Walter sunk further into the couch as I took a step towards Maggie, she didn't back down.
"We can help pay your rent if that's what you-re-"
"Its not!" I said, she raised her hands in front of her, warning me not to get too close to her. "I need to work Maggie! What part of that don't you get?"
"I don't get any of it! You've been here for two days, and you haven't spat your dummy out about your work, or about anything for that matter! Why do you choose to be difficult suddenly? Fucking hell, if you would risk getting killed just so you can shag some random smackheads then I wouldn't have bothered helping!" Her words hit me like a truck. Walter loudly sucked in air through his teeth and turned his head away from us. Maggie didn't seem to care though, she just walked off muttering "ungrateful cunt" under her breath as she went.
I turned to look at Walter. It felt like all the oxygen had been sucked out of my chest.
"Is that what you think? That I'm so much of a whore that-"
"That's not what she meant." He said, reaching out and gripping my forearm. "Look, tensions are high right now. Maggie's worried and stressed which are never a good combination for her. And your... you." He struggled to find the words to justify my need to go back to work. I shook my head and pulled myself out of his grasp.
"I don't owe either of you an explanation. I need to work, even if its unsafe." I glanced towards the front door. "I need some air; I've been cooped up in this fucking apartment for two straight days."
"(y/n)-" He tried to call out to me but I was already walking quickly towards the front door. I clicked the lock and slipped out before he could run after me. I just needed space. A quick walk around and then I'd go back in.
However, I stopped just before I pressed the button to call the elevator. Maggie was... kind of right. It was selfish of me to demand I needed to work... but I need to. I need that money. I couldn't ask either of them to give me any, it wouldn't be right. They were doing enough by letting me stay in their apartment. I glanced back at the door.
It would be selfish of me to leave, even for five minutes. Putting myself in danger despite what they did. I sighed. I hated fighting with myself like this.
On the one hand, Maggie was completely wrong to insinuate that, but I can understand where she was coming from. Its just... her wording upset me. She basically called me a whore, shouted in my face. The exact same way my parents did. It hurt and I have every right to leave and have five minutes alone.
But on the other hand, its selfish to put myself in danger.
I groaned, running a hand through my hair before I finally settled on what I wanted. I turned back around towards the apartment. My hand hovered over the doorknob until I was completely sure of my decision. The door creaked as I pushed it open. I closed it softly behind me and walked past the living room; merely glancing at Walter who was staring at me, shaking his head. I ignored the lump that was forcing its way into my throat. I didn't know where to go. Maggie had raced into her bedroom, slammed the door as she went. I didn't feel comfortable going into Walter's room... so the bathroom it was.
I slipped myself inside, clicking the lock, jumping over the bathmat, and perching myself on the edge of the bath. I overestimated its capacity as it popped beneath me. I jumped up and decided to sit on the floor with my back against the warm radiator instead.
