To both Walter and Maggie's surprise, the next morning, I agreed to work with them. Maggie gave Walter an 'I Told You so Look' and she commanded me to get dressed. She seemed... excited. Walter on the other hand, was more apprehensive. He didn't smile like Maggie did when I told them, he just solemnly looked at the wall behind me.
"What's up with Walter?" I asked Maggie once we were safely in the elevator, away from him.
"Pfft." She wafted her hands at me, "Ignore him, he's a miserable sod." I hummed and glanced down at the floor. Walters look had set heavy regrets on my heart. What if I get hurt? Or tortured? What if I die? "Oi." Maggie said, placing her hand on my chin and lifting my head up, "Why the long face? You're about to help Salvo." I tried to give her my best fake smile, but due to the frown that creeped onto her face, I wasn't very convincing.
We stepped out the elevator without saying a word, well I stayed silent, Maggie began rambling about something or other. I wasn't fully paying attention. I felt like a baby learning how to swim. Maggie was the enthusiastic instructor about to toss me, a once confident but now frightened baby, into a deep pool. I felt my breathing quicken, Maggie stopped walking and turned around.
"Hey, hey, hey." She spoke, "What's all this?" She placed her hands on my elbows.
"What if I die?" I blurted out. She seemed taken aback by my drastic question.
"Oh uh... you won't." She shrugged.
"Mags..." I mumbled, turning my head away from her.
"(y/n)." She removed one of her hands and settled it on my cheek. She raised her eyebrows at me. "If you die on your first day, you will be the unluckiest person in the whole of Salvo... It doesn't happen."
"But I will die, eventually. Maybe not today but... maybe tomorrow or next week-" She cut me off before I could spiral.
"You won't die... because I won't let you. I've kept you safe so far, right?" I nodded, "Right... This aint gonna be any different."
"You promise?"
"I promise. As long as I'm around, you wont die... You might get hurt but even then, I'll sit by your side while you recover and make sure they don't pull the plug on ya." She endearingly squeezed my cheek before letting go of me entirely.
We walked over to her motorbike. While she was unshackling it, I decided to ask her some questions.
"What time do you wake up?"
"Excuse me? Are you asking me what time mercs wake up? Or what time Maggie wakes up?" She jiggled the chains about, and they fell to the floor. I watched her as she grabbed them and tied the metal chains around her hips, like a belt.
"Maggie."
"Oh, I don't know." She shrugged before pulling the bike around, the tires crunched against the concrete. "I wake up whenever I wake up."
"Its just... your always awake before me and you don't seem like a morning person... Well, this morning you feel like a morning person." She looked at me like I was insane.
"Mate, 2 seconds ago you were almost having a pissing panic attack and now you're asking me about when I wake up?"
"I have a lot of thoughts right now!" I accidently yelled out. She recoiled a bit before bursting out laughing.
"Go on then." She leaned against her bike, "Tell me all your thoughts." I raised an eyebrow at her, but she gestured for me to go on.
"You're making fun of me."
"I'm not." She laughed before slinging her leg over the bike. "Seriously, you've got me curious now."
"Well... I'm worried that if I get on that bike, I'll die-"
