The boat ride to New York was one of the longest boat rides Jamie had ever been on, and he just wanted it all to be over with. He was sitting with Mabel and she was looking around wondering what the city was going to be like since the last time she was in New York because she wanted to see the city and see her family.
Once they finally arrived, Jamie immediately stood up and Mabel was standing behind him. The two of them walked off the boat together and Mabel looked at him and smiled at him, and Jamie chuckled at her.
As the two of them got off the boat, Jamie couldn't believe his eyes, he couldn't believe what New York was like. He imagined a lot of great things about New York City, but he didn't think too much about it until he was finally there. He saw Lady Liberty right near his eyes, and then he saw all of the people walking in a straight line, followed by the American flag. Jamie felt as if the war had never left him.
"What do you think?" Mabel asked,
"It's nice." Jamie answered,
"You know I wrote to my parents, letting them know I was coming with you..." Mabel started,
"Oh..." Jamie said looking at her, almost nervous about it. She just wanted Jamie to enjoy his time off the military. He looked over at Mabel, and as she took his hand, he walked with her through the rest of the city and saw the rest of the people walking around, and it was clear that the war hadn't left.
But he came to New York to forget about the war. He came to New York to get his mind off the military. Mabel snapped her fingers to try and get him to forget about everything that was happening. And Mabel clearly wanted to do the same.
As Jamie started to explore the rest of the city, he looked over and saw the women that were protesting for women's rights to vote. Mabel immediately caught interest in the protest and walked over to it to see what it was about. Jamie decided to stay behind as Mabel was on looking to see the protest, she didn't walk too close because she didn't want to get too hurt. But she was immediately interested in it.
"Do you think we will ever get the rights to finally vote?" Mabel asked him,
Jamie looked over just shrugged. He didn't know and didn't care for anything in regards to politics. It was the last thing he ever wanted to talk about, because he knew there would always be an argument. Especially when people have different opinions than others.
"Do you want to look around more?" Mabel asked,
"Sure..." Jamie agreed exposing his lack of interest in anything. As the two of them started walking, Mabel felt as if someone bumped into her from behind. Mabel grunted and turned around as a young woman was right behind her. She was slender, petite with the softest raven black hair with pale ivory skin, she looked up and looked over to Mabel and Jamie and apologized immediately. The woman had her nose up in a book, so it was no surprise that she didn't know where the rest of her surroundings were. Mabel just snatched the book out of her hand.
"Will you watch yourself?" Mabel said to the woman
"My apologies." She apologized swiftly, her voice, was meek and gentle, and she was clearly feeling more meek in the presence of Mabel.
"You should really watch where you're going." Jamie said chiming in,
"It won't happen again," She responded,
"It better not..." Mabel said, "Now carry on."
Mabel started to hint for her to go away, and The Woman took her book and squeezed it into her arms and rushed off immediately. Jamie looked over at her for a few seconds. He just watched as she was walking off and she turned around to look over at Jamie and Mabel. Jamie just watched as she went off, he watched as she opened up her book again and walked without paying attention, and not bumping into to anyone else. He found it incredible how she didn't even look over at anyone else.
