As Jamie started to write his first letter to Isla, he started to think about everything he was going to write to her. He didn't want to be too sappy, he still wanted to show his toughness. But he knew that Isla would have found it funny. Sappy was not his strongest suit, but he wanted to be able to show Isla that he was a bit of a romantic. There were a lot of times where he didn't know what to write, so he went for Benedict for that help. He knew that Benedict was a good writer and he knew that he was good at being sappy. He came up with several ideas for Jamie to write, to show Isla his affection and show her that he truly loved her. From everything that Jamie told everyone, Benedict was able to do what he could to write to he romantically, and they both knew that it was going to be easy. Even though Benedict noticed that Jamie was doubting himself more than he wanted to admit.
"So did you start anything?" Benedict asked,
"Just a bit." Jamie answered, "I don't know if it's any good."
"Well then, let me take a look."
Benedict looked at the beginning of the letter and noticed that he was starting off strong when it came to his writing. But Jamie was feeling like there was something missing. He couldn't figure it out, because he had put his heart and soul into Isla when they were in New York together and Jamie felt as if he told he everything that she needed to know.
"Alright..." Benedict said as he was reading it, "Good start."
"You think so?"
"Sure. You're really surprising me, Jamie." Benedict admitted. Jamie could tell that Benedict was being honest with him. He knew that Benedict always knew what he was doing when it came to writing.
So Jamie just needed to trust Benedict and trust the process for his work.
"Do you want to read it aloud?" Benedict asked,
Jamie looked around to see if anyone was coming, he didn't want anyone other than Benedict to hear him read the letter. He didn't want anyone to look at him any differently, but he was in love. He was so in love he didn't know what to do with himself.
"I do." Jamie said, "But only for you."
"Alright," Benedict said shrugging and giving Jamie back the letter, "Alright, Just imagine that Isla is there. Imagine I am her and you are seeing her for the last time."
"Why?"
"Damn it trust me," Benedict said trying not to get too argumentative with Jamie. Knowing that Jamie was stubborn, he was not going to argue back with him.
"Alright," Jamie sighed, "This is ridiculous...."
But as he was about to start reading the letter, Benedict and Jamie heard someone call for Jamie's name. Both of the men turned around, wondering where the sound was coming from until they finally saw a General walking over. Benedict looked over and saw that Jamie was nervous to see the General. They both knew what it was about, to see if Jamie was ready to fight, see if he was sober and was finally getting himself back on track. Jamie didn't want to show weakness and both he and Benedict stood up straight as the General came closer to the both of them, clearly anxious, Benedict did his best to calm down Jamie who he could tell was worried about his future on the line.
Benedict saluted the General when he stood right in front of them and Jamie did the exact same thing seconds later. Jamie could feel the sweat dripping down his face and the General stood right in front of him.
"General." Jamie saluted again and smirked awkwardly trying not to make another sound.
"You look well." The General said, and Jamie felt himself sighing in relief on the inside.
