Chapter 9

POV: Isaac

I go hunting again with Corbin and the others.
As we make our way through out the woods Jerry starts to talk to me.

"Hey, I'm Jerry. I don't think we have met before"

I smile and say "yeah I'm pretty new here"

"Oh" he looks at me from head to toe. "first time hunting?"

'Second time"

"Hm" he says "yeah you don't exactly have the body to be a hunter"

"Jerry" Lex comes between us. "Don't be a dick"

"What?" Jerry scoffs "I'm just making a conversation"

We reach the mermaid pool and everyone becomes quiet.

Just like before we don't move or make a sound for longer than an hour.
I notice that the others also are ready to give up.

But some bubbles showed up a few seconds later. Not just one, not two. Three.

I look at the others who also don't seem to know what to do.
Jayce was injured by just one. We can't handle three of them.

Connor breaks the silence by whispering "guys we gotta leave. Walk silently away from the water."

"What?! No." Jerry says "we all have been waiting for an hour, we can't let some fish scare us away"

"Jerry" Lex says "you haven't done this in a long time, we can't risk anyone getting hurt badly"

Jerry commands " Who ever taps out now, is out of the hunting group"

Everyone stays quiet. No one wants to be the one that leaves.

"Good" Jerry commands "raise you bows and let's kill some fish"

We all aim our Arrows at the bubbles and wait until they shows themselves.

After waiting for minutes I realized one of the 3 bubble places have disappeared. One mermaid is gone.
I look around me and just too late I watch the mermaid silently grab Corbin his leg and pull him into the water.

This one being way faster and having a tighter grip than the other one already dragged Corbin almost out of the sight, disappearing into the deep.

Without hesitating I put my pocket knife in my mouth as I dive into the water, following Corbin.

When I get into the water I notice the other two getting shot at by the others.

Without wasting time I try to get my eyes to adjust by the water.
I see only a glimpse of Corbin before he disappears around a corner.

I swim after him and the mermaid find him at the bottom of the water, with the mermaid eating his feet.
Before the mermaid could even swallow his toe in stick my knife into her head.

I swim back while carrying the lifeless body of Corbin.

The moment I come back above the water I see that Jerry has pulled the other two mermaids out of the water, dead.

I lay Corbin on the sand next to me while I gasp for air. Lex doesn't wait and immediately start to try to resuscitate him. By giving chest compressions.

Within seconds corbin starts to choke up water and Lex makes him sit up forward so he doesn't die again.

"I was in the water- how-"

"Isaac didn't hesitate and jumped into the water after you." Lex says "it was dumb and very risky but thanks to him you are still alive"

Corbin laughs "thank you even tho that was incredibly stupid"

I say while helping Corbin up "Yeah yeah Just a thank you would have been fine"

We walk back to the camp.

I say "Hey, but now we are even"

"What?" Corbin looks at me confused.

I smile "Well you saved my life now I saved you"

When we reach the camp. Jerry and the others carry the mermaids to the others.

Me and Corbin sit down next to the campfire.

Corbin looks at me and says "You know, you were the only one that jumped"

I shake my head and say "you shouldn't think to much about that. They were just in shock and I responded fast. That's all"

"Of course I think about it" Corbin grabs my wrist and says "from now on, I'll have you back."

I lay my hand on his shoulder "hey, I got yours too. It seems like you need to be able to count on someone in this place anyway."

Corbin nods. "You are right, now Jerry is back everything is in chaos. Everyone tries to stay calm but soon something will happen. We should be prepared."

Corbin walks away from me but his words stick with me.

I hope it's not as bad as he makes it sound.
Having to fight against pirates is bad enough, but ending up to having fight against your own people will destroy Neverland.
