The old docks are what they are, old. Since building up new docks, no one comes doesn't here anymore.
"You sure that no one comes down here?" she asks for the third time.
"Yes I'm sure. No what is it you need to tell me?" I tell her. She sighs and looks around.
"Sit here for me, it's easier for me to show you then tell you" she says whilst pointing to the edge of the dock. I decide not to say anything and just do what she asks. I take my shoes off, sit on the edge of the dock and dip my feet in the water. Out of old habits, I start to kick the water. It reminds me of the summers I used to have as a whole family by the beach before moving here.
"Here we go..." I hear Jaz say. It snaps me out of my memory. She is standing next to me with her arms drawn in front of her as if she's about to jump in. She bends her legs and that's when I realise that she is about to jump in.
"Wait Jaz!" I call out to try and stop her but I was too late. I got bombarded by the water that leaped out. I shield myself.
"Jaz?" I call out. I look around the water and couldn't see her. "JAZ!" I yell before diving in after her. I open my eyes to see and the water stings my eyes. I wave my arms around hoping to grab here. Instead, I feel something scaly. I turn to see a teal coloured fin before being hoisted up back onto the docks. I lie on my side and chock out the water.
"You okay Cassie?" Jaz asks. I wipe my mouth and look at her in the water. She has a teal tail where her legs are supposed to be.
"You're a mermaid?!" She laughs.
"Yes I am. That's why I wanted to get away from the water fountain." She admits. I'm lost for words. I always thought as mermaids were stuff of legends and myths. I wrap my arms around myself and remember that I'm cold and in desperate need of a towel.
"Where do I come in all this?" I manage to say through the clattering of my teeth.
"People like me, including Mia who you saw today, are in grave danger. My father tried to fight the man that's trying to kill us but got badly injured. The guy said that a human girl can save us...or destroy us. We used our magic to find you but after you said you were getting the dreams that no one believe, that's when I realised. He'd reached you first another way and the only way for you to have those dreams is to pass out. The doctors don't know what's going on but I do. You must save us!" She cried. This was a lot to process. I realise that I need to tell her about my latest dream but, now's not the time.
"I need to head home" I state, "My mum would have heard what happened today." She hoists herself upon the dock.
"You must promise me you won't tell anyone" She pleaded.
"I promise. Anyway, it's not my place to say" I reassure her. I smile at her and watch her dive back into the water.
You should have told her when you had the chance
I hear him in my head, his voice taunts me. I decide to head home and rest. Before though, I choice to see Drake and Andy.
"Feeling better now?" Drake asked. We're sat on his front porch steps with hot chocolates in our hands. We called it 'Our special remedy" from when we were younger.
"Yes thanks. And thanks for getting the Doctor for me." Andy is kicking a ball on the driveway. Andy always wanted to be a footballer ever since their dad bought him his first football. However, he ran away with another woman and her son whilst taking the ball with him. They were 10 and 8. It crushed Andy so Drake bought him a new one. Their mum re-married and they've been happy ever since.
"So Jaz seems nice..." Andy starts, "reckon I could get with her?" Drake and I burst out into laughter. "Sorry little bro, I don't think she's into you." Drake states whilst drinking his drink.
"Oh yeah, how would you know?" Andy asks. I look at Drake and see that he moves his eye brows up and down.
"I can tell her type" Drake teases. Andy sticks his tongue out at Drake. I laugh at him. I look back at Andy but my eyes are drawn to the guy standing behind him on the other side of the street wearing a hooded clock that covers his face.
Cassidy I hear in my head whilst the guy nods at me. It's him. He's found me. Next thing I hear is my mug slipping from my hand and landing on the ground.
"You okay Cassie?!" I hear Drake say with such concern. Andy has stopped kicking his ball and is now staring at me. I shake my head.
"I'm fine" I lie whilst going down to pick up the shards of the mug on the ground. Drake comes to help.
"Ouch!" I yell. I look down at my palm to see that I have cut my hand.
"Jesus Christ that's deep!" Drake says whilst holding my wrist. I get up and start running home.
"Cassie!" I hear both boys yell after me. I don't stop or turn around, I keep running.
"What the bloody hell happened to you?!" Was how my mum greeted me when I walked through the door.
"Nothing" I reply. I head straight to the kitchen for some bandages. Mum has to follow as always.
"Nothing? So do you care to mention what happened to your hand? Or at the beach today?!" she yells. I sigh and turn to face her whilst wrapping a bandage around my hand.
"Your friends told me what happened young lady. You are sick and unwell so what do you think you were doing?!" She pesters.
"HAVING A LIFE!" I scream at her. "You can't keep me locked up forever you know!"
"Cassidy, I'm only trying to look out for you!" She reassures.
"Then let me live mum." I say whilst leaving the kitchen and heading to bed. I pray I won't wake up for a life time.
