"Hey did you get the message, Security had someone trying to drop off something for you, at lunchtime... Books I think?" Dom asks from my office doorway, coming in and shutting the door behind him.

"No, what message?" I scan the message board on my computer and can see nothing, remembering the only books I was expecting were the books from the auction.  If it was those it was a very fast service, I had only confirmed and sent funds this morning, I was impressed..

"John, any messages or parcels?" I asked my PA through the intercom.
I could hear him shuffling paper and bit my lip to stop my hiss, the man needed to get a grip and move with the times. 'Oh Shit' I hear him say to himself and he clears his throat nervously.

"Sir, yes sir, there was an attempted delivery at 12.23, two boxes... umm, Sir... the desk was worried about the legitimacy of them and is holding both in security" he fumbles out.

"I was expecting two deliveries from the Community Library Charity can you call down and see if its those" I tell him, annoyed that he hadn't informed me.
"Yes Sir, but..." his voice now very nervous.

"He's a crap PA, fire him" Dom mutters from his seat across from me as I listen to him stutter to a nervous stop.

"Is there a problem John?" I ask, something telling me I am not going to like what he says next.
"Sir, security also has the courier who delivered them still there, they were waiting for your confirmation before they let her go... Sir" he rushes out.

I look at the clock half past three, they have been holding someone for over three hours!  My mind conjures up the image of the girl from the auction, Maude and my gut tightens, it couldn't be. I am on my feet and on my way to the elevator before I think again, Dom hot on my heels as I hit the button for the ground floor, Hoping that I was wrong but the twisted feeling in my gut telling me something was wrong.

"Good afternoon Mr Genovese's" Caitlin greets as I head for the desk, her smile overly welcoming and she stands, slipping her hands behind her back, pushing her chest forward.  I hide a grimace at her obvious action, so not interested.

"There was a delivery for me at lunchtime, what happened?" I bark out, causing her eyes to widen slightly before she glances across at the security guard.

"Stevens?" I snap and he blanches at my expression.
"Yes Sir Mr Genovese, there was a delivery and we were waiting for confirmation from your office Sir"
"Who?" my voice has quieted and I feel Dom tense at my side, he knows if I'm shouting, I'm okay, its when I go quiet people need to worry.

We follow him back to the security room where two boxes and a bag sit on the table "Where is the other guard?" Dom asks, this room should be manned at all times.

"He called out sick Sir, we are waiting for a replacement" he mutters out his explanation and I can hear him finally realising something was wrong.

I turn the bag out on the table, lifting the photo ID... Maude Deering, City Librarian.  The woman from that night, who had been popping up in my mind since then was here... "Where is she?" I bite out and Stevens pulls a key chain from his pocket, leading us down a corridor to a locked door, the key loud in the tense silence, and as he swung the door open, a furious pale face peered up at me.

Maude was slumped over the table, obviously in pain.  She stumbled to her feet, swaying and as I stepped forward, she gave a pained cry and collapsed into my arms. I swept her up, my heart racing, my mind completing a mental checklist, my gaze had catalogued the room and her and I was furious.

I carried her out into the security room, laying her out on the couch and checking her pulse, it was regular but she was sickly pale, warm and clammy  and still unconscious and would not wake up with gentle persuasion.

"Dom" I bit out, lifting her again into my arms, grabbing her purse and heading for the door. "Everything from when she arrived at the desk" I told him and he nodded, his own face grim, this was not how we did things.

"Go, I've got this" he tells me, turning back to Stevens who cowers back and I hear Dom issuing orders as I move to the rear exit towards the car park, carefully laying her in seat and buckling her in, hitting speed dial for the family doctor as I exit the car park.

Ten minutes later I was pulling up outside his clinic, Maude still unconscious in the seat and I wonder just what happened to make her like this.

"Leo, who do we have here?" Doctor Cohen asks, coming out with a nurse with a wheelchair at his side.
"Maude Deering, she fainted fifteen minutes ago, pulse is good but she's not responding" I give him the basics I know, lifting her out and carrying her inside, ignoring the wheelchair, the nurse following us as Cohen tells me where to put her.

"Step back and let us work Leo, it would be useful to know more about her history and what happened to her today" he tells me as he starts to work attaching monitors and preparing to draw blood.  I remember I have her bag in the car and telling him I'll be back I go out to get it, calling Dom on the way.

"How is she?" he asks straight away, sounding worried.
"With the Doc, what did you find out?"
"She tried repeatedly to get them to listen at the desk, they took her stuff and locked her in, no water, no contact, she tried to get their attention, but the second hour she was looking a bit pale, on hour three you could see she was in pain, she was shielding her eyes and moving like her head hurts, I reckon a migraine, no signs of anything more physical than the grip on her arm to move her through to security, but add the fact she's been stressed, locked in and not had any food or drink and we don't know what she had before arriving, that might add to her problems" he relays before pausing. "I've sacked them all, including your PA"

"Good" I tell him searching through her bag and finding a notebook with a list of important facts listed, including medication. Dom was right, she suffers from migraines. "Can you sort something for my meetings tomorrow, I won't be back today or in tomorrow... Got to go" I say hanging up, knowing he will clear the work for me and make sure everything is taken care off.

In my absence the nurse had changed her into a hospital gown and a drip was now attached.
"Doc, she suffers from migraines and as far as we know hasn't eaten of drunk anything, but security screwed up and she has been stressed for the last three hours"

"That makes sense, she's dehydrated, we will know if there is anything else once we have her blood results back..." he pauses and looks at me "How do you want this on the books?"

"Family account and all usual safety measures" I hear myself say and grin, my brain moving ahead of me, as I realise what I want "She's mine Doc" I tell him and he nods.

"Congratulations" he makes a note on her chart "I'll be back to check her as soon as the results are back, or if you need me before, press the alarm.  I'll make sure your not disturbed" he promises leaving the room.

I set her bag on the table, pulling the chair over to the bedside, slipping her hand into mine, my gaze running over her, as I line my finger up with her pulse, needing to feel it, needing to know she's just sleeping.   I gaze at her and spot the marks left by security earlier, finger sized bruises circling her upper arm.

I needed her awake to tell me her side of what happened, even if my heart wanted me to tear them apart for hurting her.  I knew Dom had fired them but I wanted them to hurt as well.
