"Can you bring me in the Salinger file" I ask my PA Leon, rubbing the bridge of my nose. My current workload busy but with Leo off on his honeymoon, work seemed never ending.
Not that I begrudged my brother, finding Maude had changed everything for him and we all welcomed her to the family, she was a genuinely lovely woman."Yes sir" he replies before I hear a bang and the double doors to my office fly open. I react immediately and I'm on my feet, my gun in hand pointing at the petite woman who had just barged in.
I can hear banging in the background and a quick glance makes me realise Leon was missing, so the noise was probably him. But he could wait, until after I dealt with her.
The woman has frozen, her gaze fixed on the gun in my hand as my gaze sweeps her, young, stressed, I can see the shadows under her eyes, her hair needing a good brush but her eyes were fiery, the light making them look manic. "Who are you?" I snap out, moving toward her, keeping the gun trained on her.
"Who am I... you ruin my life and you don't even know who I am!" She shouts, her voice crackling with emotion.
"I have no idea who you are and I know we have never met before so cut the crap, why are you here and how the hell did you get in?" I bark at her, wondering how she got past security."You liar!" She raises her voice again, moving closer. "Kill me, you might as well, finish what you started, what the hell else do I have" I watch as she breaks, I can hear the desolation in her voice, see the realisation hit her, the situation she is in and she starts to sway.
Going with my gut, I lower the gun, tucking it into the back of my suit. Just in time to catch her as she starts to fall, her body shutting down as she faints against me.
Her body is featherweight in my arms as I carry her over to the couch, laying her out before tugging my tie free, binding her wrists with it, my finger resting over her pulse for a second to make sure...
"Sir!" I hear a muffled shout and checking the woman once more I move, unlocking the door to let Leon out, his eyes widening as he looks beyond me to the woman on the couch.
"'Who is that, How?" He stutters out at the same time the elevator pings and security arrives.
"Sir we have a breac..." his voice tails off as he too see's the woman in my office. The urge to shut the door and protect her from their view hits me out of nowhere."She is secure, however I want a full review on how the hell she got this far, who let her in? Why wasn't she seen before she got to me" I growl out.
"'You!" I swing to face Leon, "Find out who she is"
"She told reception she had an appointment, that her name was Margot Sampson" he rushes out and I shake my head.
"She lied, that's not Margot" I move back towards her looking for a bag but there is nothing, I hear a soft tread behind me and growl again.
"Stay out of here, no-one comes near her!"
The remaining men back out, their eyes watching as I search her pockets, finding a phone and a wallet. I pull out her driving licence... for a Mabel Rowse and throw it to Leon. "Cancel everything in the diary today, this is a priority. Get me everything on her, and wipe the system after the check, no-one knows she is here and it stays that way""Yes sir" they reply in unison, knowing better than to question my orders, Leon pulling the doors shut and leaving us alone.
I look at the phone, swiping the screen to reveal a family image, an older couple in the centre and a younger version of the woman to the left and a young man to the right. I swipe again and the Face ID message come up, she's still out cold, so I lift an eyelid and hold the phone up, grinning as it registers and unlocks, giving me access.
I settle into the chair opposite her and start to investigate.
