I never really understood the way Rory's mind worked. You'd think if we've been best friends for over 5 years we'd practically have the same brain, right? Nope. Quite the opposite actually. The way her brain works is boys and sports come first. In my brain, school and sports come first, and boys are not in the equation.
She's been occupied by Robbie, her no-good boyfriend, for a year. He's awful. They don't look good together either. Rory is stylish and stunning, Robbie looks like a jerk. Rory is caring and friendly, Robbie is a jerk. He just acts like he's all that. Everyone loves him, but he's only nice to the people he likes. I am not one of those people, nor do I want to be. I try my hardest to stay away from people like him, but it's hard because he's dating my closest and only friend.
Sometimes when she and Robbie are going somewhere, she'll ask me to go with them. I think that stopped after the first five rejections. I would never go anywhere with those two. I am not a third wheel. I'd rather be alone in my room for the night.
Sometimes I like to be alone. I don't have many friends besides her so I'm used to it. Rory is always busy. Especially this time of year. It's November, so basketball is starting. Basketball takes up most of her time and when she's not dribbling a ball she's hanging out with Robbie. I don't know why she puts up with him and his shenanigans though, he treats her so poorly sometimes.
On her birthday last year, he was supposed to plan a surprise party for her but played video games instead and forgot to invite everyone the day before, so he canceled the party. Since I don't associate with him, I had no idea he forgot to invite everyone. I was the only one who showed up. I took her out for ice cream.
I just don't understand why she's so boy-crazy. Every time we're out somewhere she's always suggesting "cute" boys for me.
"Oooohh, how about that one over there??" She'll say. Or "The one in the blue hoodie to your right."
Now don't get me wrong she's not bad at picking people out, but I'm not interested. She always tries to find someone for me to date so we can go on double dates, or when she's busy I can hang with him, but I see no reason for that. I like my solitude. I can handle being alone.
Plus, in my house, you're never really alone. My sister Sophia is right down the hall from my room, and I always have her to talk to. My younger sister Olivia shares a room with me (although I wish she didn't sometimes), and my younger brother Anthony has his own room too. It can get pretty crazy in our house, and although sometimes I need a break, there's always company there if you need it.
Sadie Nolan does not need a boy to make her happy. I am perfectly fine with my one best friend and my lacrosse stick, thank you very much.
There aren't too many interesting people in Brookstown, anyways. You think when you go to high school it's a whole new world with new faces and a new environment. In reality it's all the same faces in a new building with new teachers. Speaking of high school, today is the last day before Thanksgiving break. At lunch, I sat down next to Rory.
"Hey Sadie! How was the physics test?" She asked.
"Hey Rory, it wasn't too bad, did you study for it?" I answered.
"I only had a little time after practice, they run late now in the season." She was never much of a studier anyways.
"You'll do fine." I assured her. We sat and ate lunch in silence for a little while.
When Rory was about finished, she spoke up. "Hey Sadie, I know this isn't really your thing, but I was wondering if maybe you wanted to come shopping with me on Black Friday?"
Great, shopping. I was never a fan. And I'm sure her next sentence will be "Robbie is coming too."
She continued, "Robbie isn't coming, it'll just be you and me, a girls' day!" Wow, no Robbie, I'm shocked.
"Ummm," I started.
"Please come Sadie, it'll be fun! I'll buy you ice cream." Darn it, she pulled the ice cream card, I couldn't say no.
"Alright, fine." I agreed. She celebrated and continued to stuff food in her mouth. "We're going to have a great time, and I'm sure we'll find some good stuff for you, things that you'll like."
I never find things that I like when I go shopping, unless it's a new lacrosse stick, but I never buy those. I highly doubt we'll be able to find something I like, even on the greatest shopping day of the year.
