"YOU HAVE TO GO!!" Rory yelled through the phone to me. "But I don't want to. You know how awkward I am at social events. I'm not a party person." I complained.
"Sadie, listen," she began, "It's a NEW YEARS EVE party. Do you know what that means?? He's gonna kiss you at midnight!"
"EWE!" I screamed. "I've never kissed anyone before! And I don't know that I want him to be my first kiss."
"Come on Sadie, live a little! This could be the start of your first relationship if you'd just let it happen!"
"Rory I told you a thousand times, Finn and I are not going to get in a relationship. We're just friends. He said he's just inviting close friends." Rory answered, "Why won't you just let this happen? I'm telling you it's going to happen."
"But I don't want it to happen." I winced at the thought. "Why not?? You don't want a boyfriend?" Rory asked. "It's not that I don't want a boyfriend, it's that I don't think he's the right ONE." I replied.
"Oh Sadie, you're still hoping you'll marry that pretzel boy aren't you? Well let me set you straight. Unless you're going to go up to him and actually SPEAK to him, you're never going to get anywhere with mystery pretzel boy. So stop fantasizing about things you don't have the guts to do and start taking advantage of what's right in front of you!!"
I was silent for a while, thinking about what she said. She spoke again, "I say this out of love. I didn't mean for that to sound rude. I'm just trying to help." I responded, "No no, you're right. I haven't gotten anywhere with the kid at the mall. I still don't want to believe Finn is trying to date me, but at least I can talk to him.
"That's right! You can actually have a chance with Finn. You just have to give it a shot." Rory said. "I don't know. I don't think I'm ready for this." I said.
"Sadie, we'll go to the party together, and we'll have a good time. I'll be with you the whole time so if you don't know what to do or say I'll have your back! You don't have to kiss him. He might not even try! Just go with me and have a good time. It'll be fun no matter what happens." She was starting to beg.
"Okay, I guess I'll go, but you better not leave me alone." I said. "Great! Now we're in business!" She said.
"I'll text Finn to tell him we're coming. Right after I check with my parents." I said. We both laughed and said goodnight. I hung up the phone.
Now I have to convince my parents this will be fine. My parents are not the easiest people to get by. They're not extremely strict, but they don't just let me go waltzing all over the place on my own. Especially not to a boy's house for New Years Eve. I've never told them anything about Finn before because I didn't think anything would come of it, but I guess I have to at least try now.
I walked downstairs to where my parents were sitting on the couch in the living room. Before I stood in front of them I took a deep breath and thought about how I wanted to say this. If I want to get them to say I can go, I have to make it sound like it's really no big deal. Here goes nothing.
"Mom, Dad." I started.
"What is it Sadie?" My mom asked. "My friend from school is throwing a little New Years Eve party at his house and he invited Rory and me. It's not too big. He said he's just inviting his close friends. Can I go with Rory?"
They sat in silence for a while. Not necessarily a good sign, but not a no, yet.
My mom spoke first. "Who is this 'Finn' and why have you never mentioned him before? If he's only inviting close friends, you and Rory must be pretty close friends with him. How come we've never heard of him?"
