Before we went to the mall we stopped at Rory's house. Her dad was the only other one home. Her mom was probably working. She has an older brother Micah, but he's in college so he's rarely home anymore.
"Hello Mr. Woodson." I said to her dad as we passed him in the dining room.
"Hi Sadie, hi Ror. How was school?"
"Good." We both said at the same time. Then we made our way up to her room. Rory changed out of her school clothes, and I waited on her bed. I was wearing my normal comfy clothes that I don't need to use Finn's hoodie for, so I didn't need to change outfits.
"So are you going to talk to him today?" She asked while combing her fingers through her hair.
"What? No. We're just going to observe. It's too early to talk." She laughed and said "Sadie you're turning this into some science experiment or something. All you have to do is go up and talk to him. It doesn't have to be a whole extensive strategy. You don't have to do any waiting, just go up and say hi!" She smiled like it was that simple. Maybe for her it was, but not for someone like me.
"I have to observe his behavior first. I have to know how he looks at people when he talks, or if he tries not to make eye contact. What if he's shy? I'll scare him. What if he's weird and I end up not liking him anyways. I have to find something else out before I just go up and talk to him." I explained.
"You have a point I suppose." Rory replied. "Let's make it our goal to find out at least one piece of information tonight. No stalling." She held her hand out for me to shake. I shook it and said "As long as I don't have to do any talking, deal."
We walked around the mall a little before doing the thing we actually went there to do. Neither of us bought anything. When we finally reached the food court, I immediately looked over to the Pretzel Shop. He wasn't working the cash register, but I thought I saw the him in the back. This is it. I've been waiting all week for this, and it's finally here.
"Is that him?" Rory asked, pointing to the Pretzel Shop. "Don't point!" I said. "We can't draw attention to ourselves."
"Okay!" Rory said as she laughed and took a seat at a table. "Can you see him good from here?" She asked. "Perfect." I said, picking him out behind all the workers in the front. He must be on pretzel making duty today instead of pretzel selling duty.
"Okay Sadie, now's the time to figure something out. Do your observing." Rory turned her chair sideways so she could see both the Pretzel Shop and me.
"Okay, here's what we know so far. He's tall, tan, handsome, nice smile, beautiful dark hair, and works at a soft pretzel place. I don't even know his name."
"Well maybe that should be the thing we find out today!" Rory suggested.
"And how do you propose we do that without talking to him?"
"Well, I'm sure they're all wearing name tags, and he can't face the opposite way forever. When he turns around, we'll go up and order a pretzel. While one of us is paying, the other one will try to find out what his name tag says!" She seemed satisfied with her plan. I was deep in thought, trying to pick out any flaws that could ruin this plan.
"There's one problem. What if he never turns around? Or what if he doesn't turn around long enough for either of us to get a good look?"
Based on her quick response, I could tell she had already thought about it. "Well, the Pretzel Shop is on a corner, so it's open on two sides. If we can't see from the front, we can walk to the side and see if we can get a better angle of the back from there. If not, I have a backup plan or two that's sure to get someone's attention in there." I was a little scared of her backup plans. She can always cause a scene if she needs to.
