Three weeks went by in a blur. The boys basketball team is going undefeated, but I still haven't been to a single game. I have gone to Rory's games, but they're not doing as good. I even stuck to my word when I told Rory I'd give Finn a chance. I talk to him a lot more than just after school now. We say hi almost every time we see each other in the halls, and he always finds me after my lacrosse practices. My practices end right before his basketball practices begin. It's more than just talking about our day and how school is going now. We're actually getting to know each other. I still haven't really let my guard down, but I'm easing up a little bit.
Lacrosse has been going great. I have been working really hard since practices began and I think Coach is pretty impressed. There are three seniors on the team but I think I have a good chance of being a captain. We should find out either today or tomorrow, and I'm pretty confident.
Christmas break starts in 2 days and I haven't visited the mall in a while. I'm too focused on lacrosse right now. Once January rolls around I might have some down time, but until I get that captain's spot there's no time for that.
During lunch today Rory asked me how preseason is going. "It's going great!" I said enthusiastically. "We have some promising freshman joining the team and our varsity squad is looking good. It'd be better if we had you though. No one is better in the goal than you." I meant that. Rory is a phenomenal goalie.
She smiled. "Thanks Sadie. Don't worry, I'll be there in no time! It doesn't look like we're going to make it to playoffs this year, so once the regular season is over, I'll finally start practicing with you guys."
"I can't wait." I said.
After that Finn came over to us and asked if there was any news about captains yet. "I can't believe you guys already started preseason practices. The normal season doesn't start until march!" He laughed.
"We take lacrosse very seriously, Finn. We practice hard so we can be champs! We already have five years down, there's no stopping now! We're going to make it six!" I pumped my fist in the air triumphantly. He laughed at me and said "I guess you have a point there. You guys have been really good."
"Are really good." I corrected him.
"We'll see about that. I'll make sure to be at your first game and we'll see just how well your extremely early practices have paid off." We all laughed and he went back to his table then.
Rory immediately started talking about the conversation. "He's already making plans to be at your very first game. He's totally into you. How do you not see that yet??"
"Maybe I do see it, but maybe I'm just not ready to believe it."
"Seeing is believing, Sadie"
"No, believing is seeing." I countered. She just rolled her eyes in response.
I really could tell now that I started to give him a chance, but I just couldn't bring myself to believe that it was true. It's hard to believe that a nice, popular, and good looking guy likes a non-popular boring girl with two friends tops. Yet, judging on the past three weeks, all signs point to yes.
There's no point in focusing on that stuff now anyways. In two days, I'll know if I'm a captain or not. Today at practice I worked my butt off just so Coach knows how hard I'm working. He has to know by now how bad I want this. My one friend on the team Jenny said I'll get a captain's spot for sure. She's in my grade, but she's not as experienced as me. I'm still taking her word for it though. I need reassurance.
After practice today Finn found me. He ran up to me and said "Sadie, I have a question for you."
I said, "Okay, ask away."
