Chapter nine
Busted
Carl was still asleep when Alyssa stepped foot outside. She had to be quiet. She knew he would've stopped her if he'd seen her sneak out. She wasn't going to go outside the walls, just outside. She needed to get out of there. She found a spot in the grass and sat down, allowing herself to just take it all in for a second. The feeling of the sun beaming on her skin, the wind softly rustling through the trees, the feeling of the grass under her hands.
"Honey, you're not supposed to be out here," Maggie sighed, hands resting on her hips with what could only be described as a tired mom expression.
Alyssa took off her cap, holding it in her hands instead. "I know," she said. "I'm staying away from people. I just needed to get out of there for a bit. I was hoping to run into you, actually," she explained. "I wanted to see how you were doing."
"I'm fine," Maggie insisted as she leaned against the brick wall, keeping her distance from Alyssa. "You should be worrying about yourself."
Alyssa shook her head. "You're not fine. You're worried about Glenn. And with everyone either sick or looking for medicine, you don't get to take a break because now you're responsible for everyone and it's unfair."
Maggie paused, pursing her lips. "That is...strangely accurate. I appreciate you caring, but you don't gotta worry about that. I'm dealing with it," she insisted. "I'm gonna see Glenn later. I'll tell you how he's doing, but you gotta go inside now, okay?"
Alyssa nodded. "Okay," she agreed while getting up. "I'll see you then."
Alyssa trudged back inside the administration, expecting to just go back to bed and sleep until the whole thing was over. Only, she was met with Carl standing in the middle of the hallway. "Damn," she cursed under her breath.
"Where were you?" Carl asked with his arms crossed.
"Would you believe me if I said the magical land of Narnia?" Alyssa joked. "I just went out in the yard for a bit. No big deal." She shrugged and walked past Carl, but he stopped her by putting a hand to her shoulder.
"You should've told me either way," Carl argued.
Alyssa frowned and shook her head. "Why?"
"Cause I'm supposed to look out for you," Carl explained.
Alyssa rolled her eyes. "Fine. I'll let you know next time."
────── Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ ──────"Carl?"
Rick's voice echoed through the hallway, repeatedly calling out for his son. Alyssa nudged Carl's leg, grabbing his attention so he took off her headphones. Carl paused the music and shot up when he heard his dad call for him again. He rushed into the hallway, pulling Alyssa with her by her hand.
