Chapter Thirty-Four
Hilltop

As it turned out, one of the people trapped inside was a doctor. Hilltop had a doctor. An actual doctor.

Alyssa appreciated Denise very much, she did her best and she was a great teacher, but she couldn't help but feel a little excited to meet someone who actually worked as a doctor, not just a psychologist.

"My name's Harlan, by the way," the doctor said as he stuffed some pills in his bag. He was sat opposite Alyssa and Maggie in a booth in the van.

"Maggie," she responded with a nod. "That's my husband, Glenn, and this is our daughter, Alyssa," she introduced. Harlan gave a polite smile that Alyssa returned. The man seemed friendly enough.

"We're bringing back medication, so you may have saved more people than just us back there, Glenn," Harlan told him.

Glenn was leaning in the doorframe to keep himself steady as the bus drove. "You're a doctor?"

Harlan nodded. "Yeah, that's right."

Glenn was eyeing Harlan's backpack. "You have any prenatal vitamins in there?" he wondered.

Harlan smiled and looked at Maggie. "For you? Well, uh, I was an obstetrician before and I most definitely owe you. So, I'd say you three just hit the jackpot."

Alyssa shifted in her seat, curiously watching and listening to the man. "So you have the vitamins?"

Harlan chuckled. "Among things, yeah," he answered.

Suddenly, the RV came to a halt. Rick informed them that they were stuck in the mud, but Jesus explained that it didn't matter because they had arrived at their destination. The group exited the vehicle and they were faced with a wall gating the community, just like theirs. Unlike theirs, this one was made from wooden logs.

"That's us. That's the Hilltop," Jesus said. He led them on a path toward the main gate.

"Stop right there!" an unknown voice called and in a split second, the group had their weapons pointed at the guard above the gate.

"You gonna make us?!" Daryl called threateningly.

"Jesus, what the hell is this?!" one of the guards questioned.

"Open the gates, Kal. Freddie's hurt," Jesus told him before addressing the group. "Look, sorry about these guys. They get antsy standing up there all day doing nothing."

"They give up the weapons, then we'll open the gates," Kal countered.

"Why don't you come down here and get 'em?" Daryl responded.

Harlan stepped forward. "Gentlemen, look, we vouch for these people, alright? They saved us out there. Lower the spears," he pleaded. It was this statement that pointed out to Alyssa that those were, in fact, spears and not guns. Why the hell did they have spears?
