Chapter Twenty-two
The Party

Rick had decided it was time they moved into their own houses. Rick, Carl, Judith, Michonne, Sasha, Carol, and Daryl stayed in the first house. Glenn, Maggie, Abraham, Rosita, Eugene, Tara, Noah, and Alyssa moved into the other  house. Gabriel stayed in the building they used for church services, so he was on his own.

Maggie and Glenn were insistent on Alyssa staying with them. Carl had been hesitant to accept it, but that was just the way it was. Maggie and Glenn shared a room, as well as Rosita and Abraham. Eugene, Tara, and Alyssa all got their own rooms and Noah took the attic.

Deanna encouraged them to make it their own. Decorate, move furniture around, anything to make it feel like home. Alyssa planned to make some drawings and paintings for her room after her first workday with Deanna.

"This is your life now. You protect and serve," Deanna told Rick and Michonne, now both in uniform, as they sat around her kitchen table. "You patrol, walk the wall, watch out for the kids. If there's a conflict, you solve it. And people will listen to you."

"Because we're wearing windbreakers?" Michonne questioned.

"Because they believe in this. Because I'm telling them to," Deanna replied. "A police officer used to live here. So we had these jackets and I wanted to make it official. So it's official. There's gonna be a government here one day. That's why I want Maggie and Alyssa working with me. There's gonna be a police force. That's why I want you two to start it. I see a vibrant community here with industry, commerce, civilization. Real lives. It might be horses and mills, but....What?"

She stopped her story to look at Rick. Rick turned his head away from the window he was looking out of to face Deanna. "Does it sound like pie in the sky?" Deanna questioned

"No," Maggie answered. Deanna nodded and looked to Alyssa

"No." Alyssa shook her head. Deanna turned to Michonne.

"No," Michonne replied. Finally, Deanna's eyes landed on Rick.

"No," Rick answered hesitantly. "Can we talk security?"

"We need a constant patrol along these walls," Rick stated as they walked along the walls. "Not just looking for damage, but signs that anyone climbed in from outside. You can move right up the supports. That's what I'd do. People are the real threat now."

"Rick, I know that you think we should all be armed within the walls. I can't do that," Deanna said.

Rick nodded. "That's fine. But you make these changes, we won't need to."

"Excuse me," Sasha spoke up as she approached them. "I want to volunteer to be one of the lookouts in the clock tower."

"There are no lookouts in the clock tower," Deanna replied.
