The police finally get the perimeter of the accident taped off. One of the police officers nearby, see a man rushing towards the victim screaming. Before the man can get to the young woman's lifeless body, they stop him. The man is screaming for her, with tears running down his face.
The one officer asks, "Do you know this woman."
The man screams, "She is my girl! I need to see her. Please, let me see her. Officer, please tell me she is alive. PLEASE!" The police try their best to console him.
They tell him, "The paramedics are here. Sir, please let them do their job."
The man is now pacing back and forth. The panic in his eyes is apparent and everyone feels bad for him. One of the paramedics pull the man to the side and asks if he would like to accompany the woman to the hospital. The man's eyes are wild, and he seems on the verge of hysteria.
The paramedics tell the man, "Sir, look at me. Listen to me. Is this your wife?"
The only thing that the man murmurs is, "My girl. My girl. Oh god. Is she dead? TELL ME! IS SHE DEAD?"
The one paramedic pulls him aside and says, "Sir, she is alive, but in really bad shape. We need to get her to the nearest trauma center ASAP. As the next of kin, you can accompany her to the hospital. Would you like to do that?" The man nods his head. He continues to look frantic, but he is no longer screaming. The woman is loaded on to the stretcher and into the ambulance.
The man holds her hand and cries. "Oh God, Sweetheart. Please be okay. Baby... Please be okay. What happened to you? Why were you here?" The paramedics feel so much pity for this man. It is clear how much he loves this woman. The man is inconsolable.
He turns to one of the paramedics and asks, "What happened to her?"
The one working on getting an IV started on the victim says, "It was a hit and run. The witnesses recounted seeing a red sports car that came out of nowhere and struck her going full speed."
The man whispers to her, "Sweetheart, I'm here. You'll be okay. They are going to get you better. Just hang on. Please, don't leave me. Don't leave me."
The ambulance finally gets to the local trauma center. The woman is wheeled into the ER and the man is brought into the waiting area for families. Someone had found the victim's phone lying on the ground next to her and handed it to him. He is in the waiting room now. Pacing back and forth, as if his pacing would keep her alive. Anyone can see the anguish this man is feeling right now, and people walking by him, say a small prayer on his behalf.
