I wish Sadie would stop asking so many questions.
"The bonfire, we're going to the bonfire," I responded, trying not to sound irritated while I threw on a sweatshirt and opened my dresser to grab a pair of socks. It wasn't Sadie's fault she didn't know our school's traditions.
"The bonfire? What bonfire?" I groaned internally and fished out two pairs of wool socks.
"You're going to want an extra pair of socks, it's getting cold," I tossed one of the pairs to Sadie and watched them bounce out of her hands. I was starting to think this girl didn't actually play sports. "The bonfire is hosted every year by the senior football players before the end of the season. No one knows when the bonfire is going to be until a mass text is sent out the night of, and that's tonight so we gotta move,"
I could see Sadie processing the information I had just told her while I opened our window and climbed out, making sure to leave the alarm clock on the window sill so we could get back in.
"Are you coming?" I looked up at Sadie, holding onto the cold metal and waiting for her to join me on the ladder.
"Yeah? Once you're down, I'll follow you like last time," She gave me a skeptical look.
"Well, it's pretty slipper this time, maybe you should just come down with me," I reached out one of my hands for her and couldn't hide my playful grin. Anything to be closer to Sadie, plus she'd warm me up a bit.
"Are you crazy? That thing barely holds you, let alone the two of us!" Leave it to Sadie to be difficult.
Before I could persuade her to join me on the ladder I heard a loud whistle from below us. It was Charlie, standing next to Jayden, Jace, Squid and Dylan.
"Hurry up you guys!" Charlie whisper-yelled up at us before sprinting off towards our parked car with the others. It's a miracle we've never been caught.
"Come on, sweetheart, we don't have all night," I stared up at Sadie while she tried to decide her next move. It was now or never and I was hoping she'd just go with it instead of being a brat like usual.
Thankfully she obliged, sighing and squeezing herself tightly against my body and the ladder while we both made our way down the frozen metal one step at a time. If we weren't in such a hurry I would've taken my sweet time and savored having Sadie so close to me again, but we needed to hurry up.
I touched the ground first, reaching out to grab Sadie's hips and make sure she got down safely before we both ran to the my car. The rest of the guys had already taken off so we had no choice but to take my car.
"I think it's only like fifteen minutes away," I put the car in reverse and sped out of the parking lot before a teacher or dean spotted us. Sadie was fumbling around with the controls in my car. "Oh here,"
Reaching into my back seat I pulled out a thick blanket I usually kept back there, draping it over Sadie's lap. It would help out a lot until my heater kicked in.
"Are you excited?" I asked, reaching over and squeezing Sadie's cold thigh, keeping my eyes on the road the whole time.
"I mean, I think I am,"
"You think you are?"
"Well, the last bonfire I went to didn't end the best. . . I guess you could say," Sadie trailed off, looking out the passenger window.
"What do you mean by that?" I glanced over at her quickly, trying to stay focused on the road, "You didn't get into a fight or something did you?"
For a few moments Sadie was quiet and I figured she wasn't going to say anything else, she was always so secretive about her past. I couldn't lie, I was curious as hell but I didn't want to pry either.
